MacFie was born in 1898 at Lee Green in London. He was the son of Robert Keith-Johnston and Jessie MacFie. At the time of the 1911 census, he was attending Temple Grove School at Eastbourne, Sussex. [1]
He died during World War I. He held the rank of Flight Sub-Lieutenant as a member of the Royal Naval Air Service. He died at Sheppey 12 September 1915 in an accidental mid-air collision. His remains were buried at Sheernes Cemetery. He died within a month of his older brother, David. It must have been a terrible time for the family.[2][3]

Flight-Lieutenant David Keith Johnston, R.N.A.S. (killed in action at Ostend in August), was gazetted in May this year. Sub-Lieutenant (probationary) Macfie Keith Johnston, R.N.A.S. (accidentally killed on September 12), was the brother of Lieutenant David Keith Johnston. David and Macfie were the eldest and youngest sons of Mr and Mrs Keith Johnston of Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire.
