The death has occurred of an old pioneer, Mrs Caroline Rowe, at the age of 82 years. Mrs Rowe was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Johnson, a young couple who came to New Zealand in the very early days, and first made their home in Wellington. There Mrs. Rowe was born in 1844. She could recall many stirring episodes of the Maori War, at which time her parents were moving between different settlements in the North Island, but, in spite of great anxiety, no harm came to this family, whose personal kindness to the natives stood them in good stead. Later on the family moved to the Nelson Province, where Mr. Johnson held the position of Customs officer to various new settlements. While living at Collingwood in 1861, the deceased was married to Mr Henry Gourland, then magistrate in the Wairau District, and their first home was where Spring Creek now stands. Later on they resided in Nelson, where Mr Gourland died in 1872. In 1882, the deceased was married to Mr W.E. Rowe, a geologist who predeceased her some years ago. There are two daughters by this marriage Mrs. A.T. Milgrew, of Havelock, and Mrs. J. Clunies Ross, of Grovetown. For the past five years, Mrs. Rowe has lived quietly in Marlborough with her daughters.[1]
