Biography

Frances Gaines Johnson was born to John Johnson and Sarah Leah Long, the first of six children on 29 Dec 1788 in South Carolina, USA.[1]

She married James Haley[2]. They had nine children: Nancy May, Sarah Barnett, Leabron, Martha M., Henrietta "Ritter", Emma B., Mary Virginia, James W. and John D. Emma was blind and lived with her parents through their lives.[3]

James died in 11 Mar 1873 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.[1] In a will dated 1856 he left control of his estate with his wife and evenly distributed the proceeds of the sale of his possessions between his nine children or their survivors. [3] Frances perhaps died sometime after her 92nd birthday in 1880, probably also in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama where she was buried beside him. She could also have died in 1862, as her FindAGrave page says. [4][1]

Research notes

James' will was written in 1856, 16 years before he actually needed it. Frances could have died in the interim (she is generally shown to have died in 1862, as on the FindAGrave site, and possibly on her gravestone), but the will was not updated to remove her as heir and admiinistrator; the statements of proof by the court also do not mention one of the administrators was dead.

The 1880 Census shows Francis Johnson living with the Allen family in which she is termed the "Mother-in-Law", and so mother to "Virginia C. Allen" whose birth year is around 1825. That would be right for Frances' daughter Mary Virginia Haley-Sexton, but she is thought to have died in 1846. It could also be she is actually a granddaughter through Nancy, perhaps, or this could be a different Frances altogether.
