Biography

James Houston Johnston was born in 1796 in Franklin, Pennsylvania. James Houston Johnston married Nancy Catherine Rankin in 1823. In 1823, they left Franklin county and came (to Fulton county, PA), and purchased 240 acres. James once walked from his home in Ayr Township to Leavenworth, Kansas and back, walking 70 miles per day. He left with $40, and returned home with $18. During the Civil War, at age 70, he walked from his home to Bloody Run (now Everett, PA) to notify General Milroy that rebels were approaching the Big Cove. For ten years, James worked as a contractor on the “Tapeworm Railroad,” a mostly failed project to connect rail lines to the B&O Railroad.[1]
