Brian Johnston was born in Little Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England in 1912, the son of Charles Johnston and Pleasance (Alt) Johnston. He was educated at Eton College and New College, Oxford before entering the family coffee business E. Johnston & Co. in the City of London in 1934. He served with the Grenadier Guards from 1939-45 and was awarded the Military Cross.
In January 1946 he joined the BBC Outside Broadcast Department and for the next 48 years he was the leading cricket commentator on BBC television and then on Test Match Special on BBC radio. He also presented hundreds of other television and radio programmes, including royal occasions, quiz shows, and Down Your Way.
Brian married Pauline Tozer in April 1948 and they had five children: Barry, Clare, Andrew, Ian, and Joanna. He was appointed OBE in 1983 and CBE in 1991.
Brian died in 1994, aged 81, and a memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey in London. The British prime minister, John Major, said: "Summers will never be the same."
