Biography

Thomas was the son of David Johnston & Mary McClelland. He married Sarah Cross. To this union, 10 children were born:

Samuel Polly Mary Susannah Elizabeth Alexander Robert John J. David Joseph Fanny

Thomas Johnston served in the War of 1812, perhaps from Trumbull County, Ohio. A Pvt. Thomas Johnston served in Captain Ephraim Browns Company in Ensign John W. Jones Platoon 2 July 1812 to 21 April 1813.

In 1822, Thomas Johnston, an Irishman, came to Hiram Twp, Portage Co, Ohio. He had lived in Pennsylvania, but moved from Trumbull Co, OH to this Twp. The first resident of Freedom Twp came in 1818, and lived there alone for 4 years. In the spring of 1822, 13 persons arrived all in one family--Thomas Johnston and his wife and 11 children. Johnston was an Irishman, who in coming to this county had settled in Pennsylvania, afterward removing to the Reserve. He was a genial soul, and could tell a joke with the true Irish flavor. He settled on Lot 32. The first frame barn was built by Johnston as the twp always had been supplied with an abundance of timber.

"Charles H. Paine, son of Gen. Paine, of Painesville, who had married a daughter of Elijah Mason, of Hiram Township, settled in Freedom Township in the spring of 1818, on Lots 31 and 41, and from that time till 1822 himself and family were the only inhabitants of Freedom. In the spring of the year last named, however, thirteen persons arrived, all in one family: Thomas Johnston, wife and eleven children. In 1823 came Newell Day, and Enos and Asa Wadsworth; in 1824, Rufus Ranney, father of Judge R. P. Ranney, and in 1825 Paul Larkcom, father of A. C. Larkcom, still a resident of Freedom Township." -- History of Portage County, Ohio... p. 239
