Henry Bryant Manning Jolley was born on October 11, 1813 in Bedford, Pitt, North Carolina, the son of Henry Jolley and Frances Manning. He was the brother of Martha P. Jolley, Reuben M. Jolley, Temperance Jolley, Diana L. Jolley, Orna J. Jolley, Francis R. Jolley and Lina M. Jolley.
Henry married first Brittannia E. Mayo on October 31, 1833 in Dresden, Weakley, Tennessee. They had the following children:
Early in 1842 two missionaries called at the Henry Jolley farm and presented their religious beliefs to the family. On 18 Feb. 1842, Henry, Frances, with their son Reuben Manning and Reuben's wife, Sarah Pippin Jolley, were baptized. Henry Bryant Manning and Brittanna Mayo Jolley joined the church through baptism on March 12th. The family wanted to join the group at Nauvoo. [1]
Henry formed the Henry Bryant Manning Jolley Company and left for Utah in 1852 with about 340 individuals and about 64 wagons. The company began its journey from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). It arrived 9-15 September 1852.[2]
In accordance with church teachings at that time, Henry practiced plural marriage. While still married to Brittania, he married Cynthia Ann Shurtliff on September 16, 1852 in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory. They had the following children:
Henry married third Mary Elizabeth Hopkins Mayo, spouse of Robert Belcher (married in 1853 in Old Sparta, Edgecombe, North Carolina) on 7 Dec 1886 in St. George, Washington, Utah. Her first husband appears not to have joined Mary Elizabeth on her journey to Utah. Henry married Elizabeth the year after the death of his first wife, but before the death of his second wife in 1902 and her first husband in 1943.
Further research is needed to determine if Henry had other plural marriages and children.
Henry died March 21, 1896 in Mt. Carmel, Kane County, Utah and was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Mount Carmel, Kane, Utah, USA.
