Biography

He was born about 1663 in Morlatten, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and was the son of Jöns Nilsson and Gertrude Svensdotter.

In 1685 he owned the tract at Aronameck which had formerly belonged to his father.

Måns or Mouns or Mounce Jones married about 1690 to Ingeborg Lycon and they had about 6 children. [1]

In 1693 he resided at Aronameck with his wife and daughter Margaret. [2]

In 1701 he moved from Wissahickon to Manatawney with a colony of Swedes. [3] They were among the first white settlers in what was to become Berks County, Pennsylvania.

In 1704, Andreas Sandel, pastor of Gloria Dei, visited Manatawny and wrote about him in his journal ...

"The 15th of October I traveled together with Gustav Gustafson, a Swede, and Daniel Falckner, a German, to Manatawny, where the Swedes have 10,000 acres, and one Swede, Mans Jonasson, has begun to dwell there." [4]

He built a stone house near a covered bridge on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. It has a 1716 date stone on the front wall and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest structure in Berks County, Pennsylvania that is still standing. It still exists today, though much altered, as part of Bartram's garden in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [1]

Delaware chiefs Sassoonan and Opekasset stopped at his house on the way to and from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [5]

In February 1719/20 he and John Jones were witnesses to the last Will of Moses Coombe of Pestauk upon Susquehanna.

He passed away on 29 Mar 1727 [1] in Morlatten, Berks County, Pennsylvania and was buried at St.Gabriel's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Morlatten (now Douglassville), Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [3] [6]

Research Notes

Jim, I think you are right.

I think LNAB should be Jonasson; CLN is Jones. See the Peter Craig sources quoted here and also the profile for his father Nilsson-20.

Jones-51845 and Jones-46955 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, burial place. Fathers of to-be-merged daughter Margaret
