Biography

Ebenezer Jones was born 6 June 1706, in Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony, the son of Matthew and Mercy (Goodspeed) Jones.[1][2]

He married, first, Hannah Jones, perhaps the daughter of Jedediah and Hannah (Davis) Jones, b. Barnstable Sept 1694. (Note that this would make her 12 years older than Ebenezer and age 37 at first marriage). Their intention was published on 20 Feb 1731/2, and they were married by the Rev. Jonathan Russel on 1 March 1732/3, in Barnstable.[1]

Ebenezer and Hannah had a son:

  1. Josiah Jones, born between 1734 and 1736, presumably in Barnstable

Hannah may have died shortly after Josiah's birth, as on 16 May 1736 Ebenezer was appointed guardian to Josiah Jones, minor son of said Ebenezer Jones, in right of the mother Hannah Jones, deceased wife of said Ebenezer Jones. [Ebenzer may have been named guardian of his own son to give him legal standing to collect his wife's/son's inheritance, as Hannah had been named in both her father's and aunt's wills].[2] A second Josiah Jones is listed as a son of Ebenezer and his second wife, indicating that the first Josiah may have died young.

Ebenezer married, second, Rebecca Crocker, in Barnstable on 20 March 1739/40.[3] Rebecca was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Parker) Crocker. [The will of Samuel Crocker of Barnstable dated 30 Oct 1753, proved 3 Jul 175?, mentions daughter Rebecca with no last name given.]

Ebenezer and Rebecca (Crocker) Jones had children:[2]

  1. John (ca 1641), married Sarah Crocker in 1761[4], then, perhaps, Mehitable Stuart in 1775[5]
  2. Barnabas (ca 1746), Revolutionary War veteran[6]
  3. Crocker (ca 1748), Revolutionary War veteran[7]
  4. Remember (ca 1750), married, perhaps, Joseph Backus/Backhouse about 1772[8]
  5. Josiah (ca 1753), Revolutionary War veteran[9]
  6. Silvanus (ca 1755), married Rachel Taylor in 1778, then Ruby Taber in 1796[8]
  7. Tabitha (ca 1760), married Joseph Fuller in 1783[10]
  8. Hannah (ca 1762), married, probably, Israel Obear in 1787[11]

Note that the birth years are all estimated, and the attached records are assumed to apply to Ebenezer and Rebecca's children but full documentation is lacking.

Disputed spouse

Jane King has been removed as the first wife on this profile. She was the wife of a different Ebenezer Jones, the son of Joseph and Sarah (Ford) Jones.[12]
