Hi Robin,

You seem to be correct about that apparent error in the 1905 book by Rice. However, in the same chapter, page 22. there is a copy of a letter from Maria Gouverneur (widow of the president’s grandson) to Mr. Rice that appears to clear this up. She indicates that Judge Joseph Jones married Miss Talliferro of Virginia. According to that letter, Joseph Jones left no children and Mr. Monroe inherited from him 2,000 acres of land in Loudon County where a residence named Oak Hall was constructed by Monroe. Let me know what you think after considering that plus the account of a trip that Monroe made to Ohio in 1817 to visit his cousin (Catherine Jones Hanna) as detailed on pages 19-20 of the referenced book by Rice. Rice indicates that he was in possession of a letter from Mr. Cass on Monroe’s staff that indicates when Monroe planned his visit to eastern Ohio. Sincerely, Phil Overeynder

I believe that Eliza Jones had 2 brothers and that only one of those is listed. Since this is a PPP, it is not possible to propose the addition without clearing the source first. The additional sibling is Benjamin Jones, born 1731 and died 1754 in King George County, VA. The source of information is from page 17, A History of the Hanna Family, Charles E. Rice, Alliance, Ohio, 1905

The source you cite has some issues, so I am reluctant to use it. It describes in the same passage that the brother Joseph was unmarried, but, sources, including his bio at Wikipedia indicate that Joseph was married and had several children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Jones_(Virginia_politician)
