DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Is there a reliable source for the name suffix "III"? If not, it should be deleted.

It looks like the Find a Grave memorial for Thomas born 1720 conflates two Thomases - Thomas of Brunswick County and Thomas of Essex/Caroline County. Which means the memorial for his father Thomas is also conflated... sort of looks like two memorials may have been merged, since the list of children includes the Brunswick County Thomas's son Stephen & the Caroline County Thomas's son George (I just now caught that, so I didn't cover that in the research notes at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jones-110837#Son_Thomas - the memorial is citing Tyler, but I think the list of children is from Find a Grave, not Tyler... I'll go add a note to the "Son Thomas" section).

I just realized that this profile doesn't have a link to the Find a Grave memorial for Thomas Jones being referenced in the comments. Here it is:
Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/192434059/thomas-jones : accessed 9 October 2021), memorial page for Thomas Jones IV (1684–1755), Find a Grave Memorial ID 192434059, ; Maintained by InSearchOf (contributor 47282406) Cremated, who reports a researching exact location.

Sam - would it be ok if I edited this profile to clean up the duplicate citations & add a bio based on the datafields/attached profiles?

What you see is what WikiTree automatically generated in 2012 when I imported a GEDCOM file derived from my research maintained in Family Tree Maker (at the time owned by Ancestry). I have never liked the formatting done by WikiTree but I don't have the time to clean up all the records imported this way. As long as you're cleaning up the WikiTree import formatting and not changing any facts listed, I have no objection.

I don't think the Find-a-Grave memorial for the other Thomas Jones mentioned in your posts is reliable and I still don't approve of a merge.

Hi Sam,

I processed WikiTree's Automatic GEDCOM Cleanup Program. If you don't like the result, it can be reversed in Changes, or let me know.

wow Stuart! That would've taken me hours with less stellar results. Thanks!

Jones-110837 and Jones-11433 appear to represent the same person because: different numbers (III & IV) but both profiles are intended to represent the same man - one has a FindAGrave memorial as a source that says his parents are Thomas Jones and Mary Tanner and the other is attached as son of Thomas Jones and Mary Tanner. Please merge. Thanks!

Jones-110837 and Jones-11433 are not ready to be merged because: A possible match, but too many conflicting details to approve the match until the conflicts are resolved.
posted by Sam Bowden Jr
Please state specifically what conflicts need to be resolved. I see two - the unsupported suffixes and son George. Neither of which should impede the merge, when both profiles have same dates and source for one gives the parents attached to the other.

Thanks!

ok. I think I've found the specific problems - aside from not being able to find the source cited on the Find a Grave memorial (the "Encyclopedia of VA bio for George Jones") - the FindAGrave memorials for this family have Thomas who married Martha Tanner born in 1665 and the Thomas, father of George, born in 1684 but married to Mary Wharton.

Another problem is the location of George's birth.

From Thomas's FindAGrave memorial

" GEORGE JONES was born in Caroline County, the son of THOMAS AND MARY (WHARTON) JONES, of that part of Essex county formed into Carlone in 1727. He moved over into the Valley of Virginia prior to the revolution, married, and lived there until his death on the 30th of April, 1810. His wife, Margaret Morgan, was born in Shenandoah County (then Frederick and now Page), in 1757, the daughter of John Morgan."

I apologize for proposing the merge prematurely!

Cheers, Liz

sigh. I need more coffee. I'm getting the generations confused. Do you have any sources for your profiles that don't go to Ancestry? (I'm not a member, so I can glean nothing from the sources cited on this profile, even if links to Ancestry were included).
posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
Jones-110837 and Jones-11433 do not represent the same person because: these profiles both appear to be for the Thomas Jones, son of Thomas Jones and Martha Tanner, but they are married to different women, with different children (with an overlap of dates that makes it impossible for them to be the same Thomas Jones). One is not the son of Thomas & Martha (Tanner) Jones, but which one? The profile for Thomas Jones-110837 had not been attached to parents prior to today (I attached the profile to Jones Jones-5771 & Tanner-523).

Research/analysis is needed of sources to determine which Thomas born in 1684/5 is the son of Thomas Jones (born c1665) and Martha Tanner.
