Family legend has it that he was a soldier in the army of King Charles I, before coming to America in 1653. He was a trans-Atlantic trader in tobacco. One record shows him sworn in as High Sheriff in an unmentioned county, on 20 May 1670.
He married Martha (Llewellyn), daughter of Capt. Daniel and Ann (Llewellyn) Llewellyn, and widow of Robert Hallam. Their children were William, Samuel, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret, Frances and Maurice Jones

"Martha Jones alias Ironmonger, late wife of John (sic, should be Robert) Jones, Sr., deceased, late of VA. Administration 29 November 1681 to Elizabeth Evernden alias Ironmonger, wife of Anthony Evernden, aunt by the mothers side of "John" (?) Jones, Jr., now beyond the seas, son of the deceased." ("This was an error in the English administration records. It was Robert JONES, Jr. who was "beyond the seas" not John JONES Jr. Martha IRONMONGER married Robert JONES Sr.")
1668 - "William Ironmonger issued a Power of Attorney which was recorded in Gloucester Co. Stating "William Ironmonger gives power of attorney to ...my brother Robert Jones & my sister Martha his wife. That same year he also gave a deed of gift of a heifer to his nephew and godson William Jones the son of his Brother in law Robert Jones with the provision that if he should die before marriage or 21 the heifer be divided between his brothers and sisters."
On July 4, 1676, Mr. Wm. Ball presented an account against the estate for bill Dated Dec. 29, 1675. Mr. Francis and Hancock Lee also presented accounts and Mrs. Martha Jones was awarded an attachment against the estate of Corderoy IRONMONGER.
