Biography

Harry Jones was born about 1875-79 in New York. His date of birth is uncertain (reflected as anywhere from 1875-79 on various documents). Harry married Sarah "Sadie" (Bears) on September 9, 1905.[1] Their first child, Alexander, died in infancy.

Harry and Sadie lived in Massachusetts and in Vermont.[2][3]

Between 1930 and 1940, Sadie wanted to take her son Harry, who was deaf, to Boston for surgery to restore his hearing. The elder Harry refused, saying he didn't believe in doctors. So Sadie packed up her kids and moved down to Massachusetts, leaving him behind.[4][5][6]

I never knew my great grandfather; he died before I was born. My mom told me this story the other night: Grampa Jones stayed in Vermont and Gramma Jones came down to Massachusetts. My grandfather Harry, then a boy, was deaf and his mother wanted him to have surgery in Boston to regain his hearing. His father didn't believe in doctors. So Sadie packed up her kids and moved to Massachusetts without him.

"Gramma Jones always said, 'Old Man Jones is no good!'" my mother told me. I asked her if she ever met him. She said, "Oh yeah! He used to come down from Vermont to visit, but he'd come late at night. We could never tell Gramma because she'd have a fit if she knew he was there. But he'd poke his head into our rooms to say hello. He wasn't the kind of grampa whose lap you'd sit on. He would just say hello and go off on his way."

Henry appears in the 1875 New York State census, so was likely born about April 1872. That is calculated from his age (3-2/12) in the 1875 census enumerated 14 June 1875.
