Biography

Elizabeth Ann Jones was born on 24th January 1879 at New Plymouth in Taranaki, New Zealand. She was the daughter of Thomas Jones and his wife Mary Jane Northcott/ Northcote. [1]

Elizabeth apparently preferred to be called Hannah, and most of the records seen for her when she was an adult are for either Hannah Elizabeth or vice versa … ie, Elizabeth Hannah. The name order changed frequently, almost as if Hannah herself was unsure of the "official" order.

Hannah married John McLean "Johnny" Telfar on 21st February 1898 at the Registrar's Office in Waitara near New Plymouth. [2]

children …

Some time after separating from Johnny, Hannah gave birth to her fourth child, a second daughter, born in Auckland in August 1918.

On 5th July 1928 Hannah married a second time, to William Oliver Gleeson. Their Marriage Certificate reads …

"On 5th July 1928 at the Registrar’s Office, Auckland, by Frank Evans, Registrar; William Oliver Gleeson, 37 years, farmer, born at New Plymouth, present residence Auckland, usual residence Aria [ie, a small farming area about 130km NNE of New Plymouth], son of George Grey Gleeson, bridge builder, and Hannah Elizabeth nee Northcote [sic]; married to Hannah Elizabeth Jones, 46 years, divorced, decree absolute 17 March 1925, born at Bell Block [ie, near New Plymouth], present address Auckland, usual address Aria, daughter of Thomas Jones, builder, and Mary nee Northcote; witnesses VP Waller, Auckland, civil servant and F Newmarch, Auckland, civil servant."

Hannah and William divorced just over 10 years after they married, in September 1938.

Hannah died at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland city on 14th July 1954. Two days later she was buried at Waikaraka Cemetery … ie, on 16th July 1954.
