Captain Jones

John Peyton Jones arrived in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) with the 63rd Regiment Of Foot on 16 October 1830. After a short time, he was placed in charge of a military party at Eagle Hawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula, south of Hobart. On his initiative, a chain line of savage dogs were placed across the narrow isthmus at Eagle Hawk Neck. This, along with feeding the sharks in the bay, prevented the escape of convicts from the work gangs in the Port Arthur area.

John married Eliza Dumas of Caithness, Scotland, the daughter of Capt. John Craig Dumas of the same regiment, in St John’s Church, New Town on 20 February 1837. [3] They had ten children.

On 30 July 1841, Governor Franklin appointed John Peyton Jones to the position of Police Magistrate at Westbury . Later he was elected the first Warden of the Westbury Municipal Council in 1863. Mr Jones died at the age of 82 on the 21 November 1891 and was buried in the Anglican and General Cemetery in Dexter Street, in Westbury, Tasmania.

Capt John Peyton Jones died on 21 November 1891 in Westbury, Tasmania, Australia.[4] He is also remembered as an artist. His only known artwork is a watercolour of Westbury (1837, private collection, photographic reproduction in Mitchell Library). [5]
