Biography

Edward Jones was born in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland on or about 8 February 1831. (This date could be his baptism date). His approximate date of birth is recorded in the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital Admissions and Discharges 1826-1930 (England):

In 1849, Edward married Mary Murphy. They had two sons, Peter, born in 1852 and Patrick, born in 1853. Both children were born in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland.

On 4 April 1856, the Jones family set sail for New Zealand from London, England on board the "Lancashire Witch". Edward was listed under Soldiers of 65th Regiment There were also 31 women and 32 children on board belonging to the 65th Regiment - including Mary, Peter and Patrick.

The Lancashire Witch first arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on 20 July 1856 after sailing in via Hobart Town in Tasmania and Sydney, New South Wales. On 01 August 1856, the Jones family finally disembarked at Auckland, New Zealand. Edward was dishcharged from the regiment shortly afterwards (possibly at Otahuhu, Auckland).

Two more sons were born to Edward and Mary - Edward was born about 1857 and Henry about 1862.

Henry died on 7 September 1872 in Auckland, New Zealand. His burial details, including his gravesite location, is currently unknown.

We will continue to track Edward. Unfortunately the Jones family history is largely unknown to us as my grandmother was adopted as a toddler and she knew very little about her heritage. Dates and names may change perhaps as Edward Jones has been previously confused with a chap of the same name, who also resided in Auckland. Hopefully we will find more on Edward and his family as we go along.
