Birth

Richard was born about 1774 in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire.^[1]

The 1851 Census has his estimated date of birth as 1774, in Llanbeblig, and his death record from later that year shows an estimated birth year of 1775. Extrapolating from those two records, several baptismal records have been identified that could fit Richard:

1. Richard Jones, 10 Jun 1772 in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, to Richard Jones and Elizabeth (Unknown).^[2]
2. Richard Jones, 30 Sep 1773 in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, to Humphry Jones and Cathe (Unknown).^[3]
3. Richard Jones, 01 May 1774 in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, to Hugh Jones and Margaret (Unknown).^[4]
4. Richard Jones, 01 May 1774 in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, to David Jones and Grace (Unknown)^[5]
5. Richard Jones, 30 Jul 1775 in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, to William Jones and Catherine (Unknown).^[6]

On Richard's marriage record, one of the witnesses is listed as William Jones. Using that information, there are two potential connections that could lead to Richard's parentage.

• If William is Richard's brother, there was a William Jones born in Llanbeblig in 1775 to a John and Anne Jones, who also had a son named Richard, born in 1778.
• If William is Richard's father, there was a Richard born in Llanbeblig to a William and Catherine Jones in 1775.

Based the estimated dates of birth listed on Census records etc., I am inclined to believe that William is Richard's father, but without any probate records or others to connect them, it remains speculation. S. Grimaldi 14 Apr 2021.

Richard Jones of Llanbeblick and Ann Williams of Trefriw married by Banns on 3 August 1798 at Llanrug, Caernarvonshire, Wales^[7] The wedding was witnessed by one John Llyod and one William Jones.

1. Ann Jones, baptized on 12 March 1807 at Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire.^[8] Richard's profession is listed as laborer on her birth record.

Richard appears on the marriage record of his daughter Ann on 18 September 1837. The record shows that he was a sailor. 1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census

This census shows Richard and Ann residing together at Cae Glas, Llanrug, Caernarvonshire. Both of their estimated dates of birth are listed as 1776, and their ages as 65. His occupation is listed as an agricultural laborer on this census, which could be indicative of a shift in employment or that the record does not belong to the Richard in question. Based on the ages, locality data, and the lack of any other marriage between a Richard and an Ann surfacing in the appropriate date/locality range, it seems likely that this record does belong to the Richard in question, and he has transitioned employment in his latter years, for one reason or another.^[10]S. Richard and Ann are both still alive and residing in Cae Glas, Llanrug, Caernarvonshire. Richard's occupation is listed as an agricultural laborer/pauper, and Ann is listed as a pauper. Richard is listed as 77 years of age, with an estimated birth date of 1774. Ann is listed as 76 years of age and an estimated birth date of 1776.^[1]

Death

Richard died in 1851, and was buried on 29 Nov 1851 in Llanrug, Caernarvonshire, Wales, at the age of 76.^[11]

I have found several possible christenings in Llanbeblig but am unable to find anyone in the census with the correct occupation. He could have changed occupation or died before 1841 census. Hilary Gadsby 11 Apr 2021.
