Biography

James Jones was a grandson of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

James was born about 1734. He was the son of Edward Jones and Abigail Shugan. He passed away about 1794.

This Jones line begins with Edward Jones who is found living in Isle of Wight, VA, as early as 1653. He came from England and is related to Rev. Rowland Jones of County Bucks, England, probably as a brother. The Jones descendants became pioneer settlers of Granville County, North Carolina. As the family grew, they migrated to Chatham Co., NC and to Hardeman Co., TN.[1]

Captain James Jones (1730-1777), served as Captain in the Revolutionary War of the 3rd Military in Light Horse Calvary, NC.[2]

“Captain James Jones (1730-1777) married Charity Alston (b. Jan 19, 1743). Their Marriage Bond is dated August 12, 1761. He was a Captain in the N.C. militia. He was Member for Wake County at the Provincial Constitutional Congress; and was first Senator to represent Wake County in the General Assembly, 1777, and died while in office. Captain James Jones served in the 3rd Military in Light Horse Cavalry of North Carolina during the Revolution.[3]

James Jones served in the North Carolina Senate during 1777. He was one of the most prominent men of his state and did his part in making the Shocco Joneses a family never to be forgotten in the history of the State of N.C. His will was written the 10th of March 1775, Wake County, North Carolina, and was probated in September, 1777. He died while in office.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Jones-25913 and Jones-18945 appear to represent the same person because: same birth date, see not on jones-25913 regarding parent is Edward Jones III and Abigail Shugan (Sugar). Please approve
I have an OLD application to the Huguenot Society that claims that James Jones was son of Edward Jones III (1701-1751) and Abigail Sugan (Sugar); and that Abigail was the dau of John Sugan / Jean Sucre and his wife Elizabeth. It says "Jean Sugan is listed on page 123 of the 1962 'Index of Potential Huguenot Ancestors.'" The other source is James Jones Banks, "Descendants of Capt. James Jones," Rome, GA 1971. I'll see better sources.
