Biography

Sarah Jones was born about 1723.

Marriage

St. John's Parish[1]

"Dan'l. Pocock Jun'r. and Sarah Jones were married June 26th 1751."

Children

They had the following ten (10) children:

Salam Poacock, b. 26 Mar 1753,[2], d. 1776.
Daniel Poacock, b. 24 Mar 1755,[2] d. 1827.
Mary Poacock 11 Apr 1757,[2] d. 1794; married Galloway.
James Poacock 15 Mar 1759,[2] d. 1819.
John Pocock, b. 20 Jun 1760,[3] d. 1845.
Eleanor Pocock, b. 1762, d. 1813; married Charles Rockhold.
Susannah Pocock, b. 1764, d. 1815; married Cornelius Garrison.
David Pocock, b. 1766, d. 1842.
Elijah Pocock, b. 1770, d. 1862.
Charlotte Pocock, b. 1774, d. 1848.

Land

In 1782, Daniel Pocok 50 [years old] and Sarah Pocok 46 [years old] are listed in possession of a 111 acre tract in Baltimore County, Maryland, part of My Lady Manor.[4] This appears to be the same Lot No. 17 that their son David patented on 19 September 1793.[5]

Note: While the record (p11-14) appears to be dated 1782 (see p11) or thereabouts, it is not clear what date Daniel Pocok (see first column) came into possession of this tract.

Death

She passed away 8 February 1818, presumably in Baltimore County, Maryland.[6] She is buried at Saint James of My Ladys Manor Cemetery in Monkton, Baltimore County, Maryland.[6]

Research Notes

Vital Statistics

Birth
Her birth date is estimated from her husband Daniel Pocock Jr's birth date and a 1782 land record[4] that lists them as "Daniel Pocok 50 [years old] Sarah Pocok 46 [years old]," ("about" 1719 + (50 years - 46 years)) = "about" 1723.

Note: While the record (p11-14) appears to be dated 1782 (see p11) or thereabouts, it is not clear what date Daniel Pocok (see first column) came into possession of this tract.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Since there is no reliable evidence of a middle name for her, the middle name of Eleanor has been removed (again). If anyone has a reliable source (other than online trees and an error-ridden county history that is loaded with misinformation), then please let us know.

Is the inscription on the gravestone available? What is the source for the death date, and why is it different in the data field versus the Find a Grave "source"?
posted by Ken Spratlin
The death date has been changed to match the FG source. Sometimes these are minor errors made when the profile was originally uploaded via a gedcom. Good catch.

What is the source for her middle name?

The find a grave website I believe

The Find a Grave memorial has a picture of a gravestone, but is otherwise unsourced.

The name on the gravestone is hard to read in the middle, but the spacing of the visible letters and the width of the unreadable part is consistent with it saying "SARA[H] [PO]COCK". There isn't room for Eleanor in the middle.

Let me look some more. Thank you.

Voorhees gives it in "Notes on the Pocock Family" but he may have copied it from History of Indiana, Special Edition for Marshall County, 2 vols. where it is shown as "Eleanor Pocock" (that's not a typo. Eleanor Pocock!)

Jones-67020 and Jones-21132 appear to represent the same person because: looks like duplicate. if you agree, let's merge them.

Thanks!
