John was married to Elizabeth Rebecca Caldwell in 1880. They were the parents of Elnora, Della, Zada, Anna, Edgar, Albert, Walter, and Infant Jones. Elizabeth died in childbirth in 1898.
John married Maggie Robinson in 1901. They were the parents of Claude L. and Carl Augustus.
John died at the age of 68 of chronic cardiovascular disease. His death certificate also noted that he suffered from manic depressive disorder.
