Biography

Name

Name: Sarah Jane /Jones/[1]

Sarah was born in 1732 at a time when her parents were attending New Garden Monthly Meeting (MM) in Pennsylvania. Before 1755 she, her husband and several children moved to Orange County, NC with many friends and family where the group established Cane Creek MM.

In 1770 her husband had lot #22 in Wrightboro, named after James Wright who was the Colonial Governor of Georgia. The Quakers and pacifists were fleeing the buildup of the Revolutionary War and the lack of tolerance in North Carolina.

The group got 42000 acres from the Governor and established Wrightborough MM. [2]

In 1788, Georgia became a state of the United States of America and the fate of the Wrightborough was in jeopardy. The group began leaving for Illinois and Ohio. Sarah, in her 60s and maybe in poor health, stayed until she died in 1801.

Research

McDuffie County is the home of the first Quaker settlement in Georgia, called Wrightsboro. However, this region originally fell into Richmond and Columbia Counties and those records should also be researched for quaker ancestors. McDuffie County was created from Columbia and Warren counties on Oct. 18, 1870 and was named for George McDuffie (1790-1851), the former South Carolina Governor, Congressman, and U.S. Senator. Thomson is the county seat and the location of the old Quaker Village known as Wrightsboro (formerly Columbia County, now McDuffie). The "Friends" came from North Carolina in 1770 and settled along Germany Creek. Early Settlers: Judge E. S. Harrison, Dr. William Andrew Martin, Charles Washington Matthews, Dr. William Marion Pitts and Colonel John Allen Wilkerson. [3]

Notes: Some data says that Eleanor Parke Lindley Jones and Henry Jones went to Wrightsboro. A thorough search found that Eleanor and Henry died soon after 1748. Wrightsboro was established in 1770. Henry Jones listed in Wrightsboro may have been a relative.

Jones-29853 and Jones-26037 are not ready to be merged because: There is not enough information in the Jones-26037 profile to call this a clear match at this time.

Jones-29853 and Jones-26037 appear to represent the same person because: 26037 has very little information, birthday close, no apparent ancestors or descendants but is the lower number. Any problem with that?
