According to the Jones family bible, Maxson was born on 24 October 1821.[1] Various online sources confidently state he was from Petersburg, NY, though there do not seem to be any concrete sources for this. His son Philip listed Maxson's birthplace as "New York State U. S." on his death record, so it is at least reasonable to think that he was from New York.[2] Some other online sources draw together a narrative that Jones, credited as naming the hamlet of Bloomington, chose this name after "his hometown in Illinois".[3] It is possible that both may be true on some level, or there are inaccuracies; Jones could have easily spent time or grown up in Bloomington, Illinois, after being born in New York.
It is not known when Maxson Jones came to Canada. The earliest known record pertaining to him in Canada is the record of his marriage to his wife Lydia. It records that the marriage took place by license at Toronto's St. James (Anglican) Cathedral on 30 June 1846 and was performed by H. J. Grasett, the assistant minister at the time. Maxson is listed as being "of Whitchurch" while Lydia is "of Markham",[4] so this would have been quite a trip for both of them. An Anglican marriage likely catered more to Maxson's religious and cultural sensibilities than Lydia's, whose Wideman family was generally rooted in the German Reformed tradition at least going back to Pennsylvania. This record also means that Maxson had already moved to Whitchurch by this time.
He passed away in 1895.
