Flora Ann McIver Jones

She married Simpson David Jones who owned a terpentine mill, department store, and corner saloon in Sanford, North Carolina.

Simpson died in 1899 (cause unknown) leaving Flora with lots of land and a big house (somewhere near RR tracks in W. Sanford, NC), but no money to raise 7 or 8 children.

The children's names are: Edgar, Guy, Lee, Emma Kate, Janie, Floy, Ethel, and Annie.

Apparently, there were lots of men working on the RR at that time, so Flora provided board for them since they were working long periods of time away from their homes. She may have also provided room, since the 1910 census gives names unrelated to my family.

While Flora was running the boarding house, one of the RR workers, Allie Young Russell (who was working his way through school) fell in love with Janie McIver.

Janie had fallen at age 5 and shattered most of the bones on one of her feet. From then to when Allie married her, she was in a wheel chair.

After marriage and the birth, Seba Russell, they moved to Baltimore, MD where Allie was a dental surgeon at Fort McHenry Army Hospital (he is listed as an "officer" in the 1920 Census).

He was a pioneer in facial reconstruction for the WWI victims and invented medicines and protheses to rebuild faces. Co-incidently, he had been interested in sculpture as a teenager. Afterward, he taught at the U of MD Dental School (he still holds the record for the youngest student to ever enter the dental school (Age 14).

He was president of the Maryland Dental Society and went into private practice.

After he died in 1941, Janie continued to mix, bottle and distribute a medicine he'd invented named Zincreo.

Eventually it was bought by a pharmaceutical company and the formula is now sold as Paragoric.

It was told to me by my mother that within a year after Dr. Russell died (Janie Russell never referred to him in any other name, but Dr. Russell)

Janie could not mix the formula any more, because she ran out of one of the ingredients. She searched frantically (since this was her only means of support), but the source and/or distributer of the ingredient was nowhere to be found.

The story goes that Grandpa Russell appeared at the foot of her bed in a dream and told her where to order the ingredient.

She did so and mixed the medicine for many more years until the patent was sold.
