Biography

Allen Wheeler stated she was "part Mohaw". Though our DNA tests show up with very little Native American, if any.

Biography Census at William and Catherine Wheeler's house 1910 stated Alson and Catherine Gray were from North Carolina.

Sources Allen Wheeler, grandson of Alson Gray. Letter to Queenie Wheeler 1964. Marriage bond for Alson Gray and Catherine Jones. 9 Oct 1849 • Guilford, North Carolina, USA Alson Gray + Cathrine Jones ~ 9 Oct 1849 bondsman ~ Ithamar Gray

Notes Allen Wheeler (grandson of Alson Gray and Catherine Jones) remembered in his letters to his sister Queenie Wheeler Long (she was only 10 when their mother passed) that his mother's father was Alison Gray and her mother was Cathrine Jones. He said that their children were "first Elvira, she died as a young lady, then Annie, then Joseph, then Sherman and Grant (twins), then our mother." Sherman and Grant "died in a fire" as children playing in a large brush/wood pile that was set ablaze to make a clearing. The family moved from North Carolina and lived in the Cincinnati, Pike, Illinois area.

Family Lore: Catherine Gray may have only been 14 years old when she married William Wheeler, age 40. Her birth date is 1871. Married in 1885. The story was that the Grays were a large family with more children than Allen listed and could not afford to feed them. William Wheeler needed a wife and promised to care for Catherine. Her name on the marriage bond is listed as "Sarah C Gray."

Name Sarah C Gray Gender Female Marriage Date 7 Jun 1885 Marriage Place Pike, Illinois, USA Spouse William Wheeler Film Number 001315808 Household Members Name William Wheeler Name Sarah C Gray

William Wheeler's first wife Sarah Mock died in 1877 after 5 years of marriage. They had one daughter named "Belle."

On Catherine Wheeler's death certificate her father's name is listed as "Ellis." On other documents as "A Gray."

The Alson Gray and Catherine Jones lines have been a brick wall for us off and on for decades.

Catherine Gray Wheeler's marriage bond lists her father's name as "A Gray" and her death record lists "Ellis". Ellis is short for Ellison. Ellison sounds like Alson.

When Alson Gray and Catherine Jones got their marriage bond in NC the bondsman was listed as "Ithamer Gray". A bondsman is usually a relative of the bride or groom who basically swears the marriage is legal under penalty of losing his money. So I know that Ithamer is a relative of Alson/Ellison. There is a Ithamer Gray line that shows up. There is also a General Alexander Gray who married a Sarah Ellison. Which means Alican/Alson/Ellison could have been named after his mother's family.

So I think we should be looking for Ellis/Ellison/Alson Gray with a relative named Ithamer in the records who married Catherine Jones.
