Biography

Joseph was born on June 5th 1840 in Horstead Keynes, Sussex, England^[1][2] to Henry, a Stone Cutter, and Elizabeth.

Joseph lived with his family as shown in the 1841^[3] and 1851^[4] census returns.

Joseph worked as a carpenter all his life, as well as painting and wheelwrighting.

Joseph married Eliza Knight on Christmas day 1863 and they went on to have at least 10 children (there are 10 recorded over the various censuses).

In 1871 the growing Jones family is living in Honey Wood, Ditchling Common. Joseph is working as a master Carpenter while Eliza is bringing up their 4 young children.^[5]

The 1881 census shows Joseph and Eliza living near Ditchling common with 7 of their children - aging from 13 years to 2 months. Joseph is working as a Carpenter.^[6]

In 1891^[7] and 1901^[8] Joseph is living in Keymer, Sussex. Firstly with his four youngest children, and 25 year old Annie who appears to be running the household after the death of Eliza. In 1901 Joseph is living alone.

He passed away in 1904 in the Cuckfield district of Sussex.^[9] (there is only one Joseph with no middle name recorded in the death records born 1838-1842, died 1901-1911 in sussex.... and this is it.)
