Biography

Bertie James Holder Jones was born in Hobart on 20th December, 1891. His parents were James Jones & Mary Cooke Hill. (1)

Bertie married Elsie Smith at St John's Church, Newtown on the 19th December, 1914. The wedding was officiated by Reverend S.H. Hughes. (2)

Their first child was born in 1916:

Hilda Jessie Jones (1916 - 1926)

Bertie joined the Australian Imperial Forces on the 2nd October, 1916 at Claremont Enlistment Station. He was described as being 24 years, 8 months old. He was 5' 4 inches, 121lbs, fair complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. He had a scar on the left side of his upper lip. His religion was listed as a Church of England.

Bertie received a gunshot wound to his right leg and was sent home from the Armed Services on 16th December, 1917. He was officially discharged from the Australian Imperial Forces on 3rd September, 1918.

The family moved back to Hobart and settled down at 2 Cane Street, West Hobart.

Their second child was born in 1917:

Bertram Hedley Samuel Jones (1917 - 1983)

In 1922 Bertie was listed on the Electoral Rolls as a Lift Attendant, living at 159 Macquarie Street. Strangely enough, Elsie is not listed.

In 1928 he was listed as a Machinist living at New Street, Hobart. Elsie was listed at living on the corner of William and Goulburn Street.

In 1946 both Bertie & Elsie are shown living at Boyer, New Norfolk. Bertie is listed as a Caretaker.

In 1949 they are both shown living back at 2 Cane Street, West Hobart.

In 1972 Bertie was still living at 2 Cane Street, West Hobart. Elsie had since passed away in 1970.

Oddly enough I can't find any record of his death or burial in Tasmania though some ancestry sites say he was buried in Sydney.
