Twenty year old Joseph Jones together with his brother James applied for free passage to the new Colony, South Australia in 1836. He was to be employed by the South Australian Company and travelled out from England on the "John Pirie" ship owned by the SA Co. They arrived at Nepean Bay Kangaroo Island in August 1836. Joseph married Harriet Wallace about this time but there is no record of her being on the "John Pirie" with Joseph. Their first child William Jones was born in South Australia in 1837 and was the first of 9 children. As the "John Pirie" arrived at Nepean Bay and the settlers set up a tent community to become Kingscote, it is likely that William was conceived at Kingscote KI. Joseph and Harriet eventually lived at Clarendon and their first born son, William, married Agnes Giles at Clarendon in 1862. William and Agnes had a son Bernard Wallace Jones in 1883. No death record appears for Joseph but his last child Edwin, was born at Clarendon in September 1857 and his widow married James Dix at Clarendon on 7 Feb 1865.
