Joseph was the son of Isabella Summers and John Jones of Flag Swamp, Waikouaiti. He was employed as a labourer by Burns and Johnston, Dunedin. Joseph enlisted at age 26 during WWI. Rank private, serial no 8/1270, Otago Infantry. He embarked on December 14 1914 with the 2nd Reinforcements on the Willochra, Verdala or Knight of the Garter to Eygpt arriving January 1915. Joseph was posted to Base detail with 1st NO Regiment at Kubri. On the 7 August, Joseph was wounded in action and admitted to C Section , NZ Field Hospital at Saxli Beit Bere where he died that same day. Joseph is buried at New Zealand No 2 Outpost Cemetery - grave reference Sp. Mem. 15

Joseph's plaque and scroll were given to his brother James and his medals to sister Ellen (Summers) Ward.
