Biography

Richard Jones, husband to Frances, died prior to 20 March 1653.

Research Notes

It is almost impossible to know for certain where Richard Jones was born, as there are too many Richard Jones to be assured of which is the correct one. It is certain he died in York (later part of Gloucester) Co., Virginia before March 1653. See the following:

"Col. Richard Lee, 300 acs. Glocester Co., 20 Mar 1653, p. 27. Upon the No. side of York Riv, abutting upon land of Richard Jones, dec'd., now in possession of Francis Jones, relict of said Richard Jones, & E.S.E. upon land of Robert Todd. Trans. of 6 persons.".[1]

His only verified spouse was Frances Anne (Baldwin) Townshend Jones Williams. She married Richard Townshend sometime before 1647: On 2-10-1647, Capt. Richard Townshend "by God's Grace bound for England in the god ship Honor of London", named his friend Rowland Burnham his attorney, to sell any goods and chattels etc. with consent of "my dear and well beloved Wife, Frances Townshend". He had died by 1650 at which time "Mrs. Frances Townshend, Widdow took out a patent in her name for 2200 acres in Northumberland Co. (from "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607-1625" compiled by Annie Lash Lester - needs verification). Her maiden name is confirmed by the following entry in the records of Westmoreland Co: William Baldwin, acting for his sister, Mrs. Francis Jones, widow, in sale of 200 acres, part of "2200 acres granted unto Frances Jones by pattent Feb 1650" to Oliver Balfe of Virginia.[2]

Disputed Child

A previous version of this profile claimed that this Richard Jones of Virginia was the father of Cadwalla(n)der Jones. While Cadwallader Jones did have a father named Richard Jones, that Richard was a merchant of London where he died.[3] That Richard never lived in Virginia.

Disputed Origin

A previous version of this profile also claimed without source that this Richard Jones was the son of Cadwallader Jones (1600-bef.1672). As reflected by the 20Jun2021 comment of Joe Farler below, there is no known evidence for this Cadwallader Jones who married Ann Bluet around 1646, having a son called Richard. Please do not reattach this relationship without citing a source and first posting a comment for discussion on this profile.

As Richard is Project protected could somebody from the Southern Colonies project please remove Cadwallader Jones as his father, please. There is no evidence for this Cadwallader Jones who married Ann Bluet around 1646, having a son called Richard. Richard or his children, as heirs, would have been mentioned in Cadwallader’s will. I can find no evidence anywhere including various archives, which give a son Richard, for Cadwallader. Thanks.

Done. Thank you for flagging this issue.

This Richard Jones could not have been the Richard Jones who was father of Cadwallader Jones of Virginia. See Kathie Forbes' answer to this g2g question: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1132698/two-cadwallander-jones-attached-sons-richard-jones-jeffries where she quotes a deed that identifies Cadwallader's father Richard Jones as a merchant of London-- therefore, not the Richard Jones of Gloucester, Virginia.

Jones-78979 and Jones-561 are not ready to be merged because: in addition to the dates being off, the different wives appear to indicate these profiles are not intended to represent the same Richard Jones.

Trying to sort out the Virginia Peter Joneses (again). I've re-added PPP & added Virginia Project to support it.

I do not see support for birth location, birth date, or parents - born about 1608 in Exeter, Devonshire, England to Cadwalader Jones and Ann (Bluet) Jones. Does anyone have sources for that info? (The first sentence under Research Notes: "It is almost impossible to know for certain where Richard Jones was born, as there are too many Richard Jones to be assured of which is the correct one.")

I also do not see support for the profiles attached as children.

Thanks!

P.S. Information in the comments for Cadwallader Jones-6847 (attached as father) clarify that Richard's mother could not have been Anne Bluett. I'll detach her profile (again - it was detached previously in 2018).

I've detached Peter as his son, as I can't find support that he is.

It appears that there are conflicting spouses: Ann Jeffries-685 and Frances Baldwin-62 that have not been addressed in the proposed merger.

thanks David. I've removed the proposal to merge Jones-561 and Jones-78979.

Jones-78979 and Jones-561 appear to represent the same person because: dates are way off on Jones-78979, but these are intended to be the same person and should be merged (retain info on Jones-561). Thanks!

I removed PPP since the profile is not managed by a project. If you think it needs to be a project-protected profile, you could contact either the England Project or the Virginia Project to see if they agree.

Cheers, Liz

Jones-38522 and Jones-561 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same son. Discrepancy in birth and death details. Unless sources available, suggest use details on Jones-561.

Jones-561 and Jones-38522 are not ready to be merged because: dates do not agree
Mother is clearly incorrect due to birth after his birth

Jones-561 and Jones-38522 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse, but different birth place - could be another mismatch

I do not see this book in the sources: https://archive.org/details/genealogicalhist01jone

I think it might be of assistance and help clarify the sons of Richard Jones, who are listed in order of birth on page 36 as " Cadwallader, William, Richard, Abram, and Frederick. The eldest four emigrated to the Virginia colony, leaving Frederick at home with their parents, in England.

update: deleted bulk of the chart Cynthia B. referred to, which was the info for a different family

Just glancing through, it appears this profile includes information about a different Jones family also.

Much of this bio is an extended family chart and not appropriate for this profile. My guess is that it is uncredited cut & paste and therefore should be deleted.

Also all the user-contributed sources can be deleted.

Any manager want to take on this clean-up job? Thanks!

It appears that Richard Jones was much older than his mother!
