Research Notes

Given the DOB on this profile, he could not have been a son of Peter Jones III.

Ann Simmons and Ann Simmons have been detached as the wife of Richard Jones. To date, the only evidence of her last name is unsourced internet trees.

James & David Jones may have married Mary & Betty Gholston (daus. of Anthony Gholston residing on East Creek, the next creek to the East of Beaver Creek). These couples' first children recorded by Rev. Wm. Douglas as born in 1782.

Jones (John) vs. Jones
On the motion of the complainant. Showing by confession of the defendant that Ann Jones, one of the defendants, has removed five Negroes and intends to remove sundry slaves and horses out of this commonwealth, which were only lent her during her life by the will of her husband Richard Jones, deceased. That four of the slaves so lent her (to with: Sam, Abram, Sarah, & Rachel, four horses, and are now here). This ordered that the said defendants do not carry from this county the said slaves until they give bond and approved security to the said account before the next court to deliver the said slaves, horses.
This part of the said slaves and other personal estate delivered in Louisa County of the Common Wealth of Virginia within three months after the death of the said Ann (her dower), and that the plaintiff serve the said Ann with a copy of this order and take bond in the amount of 500 pounds and make a bond of her. (The above hearing appears to have been a result of Ann Jones leaving Louisa Co., Virginia. She was probably going to Robertson Co., North Carolina (later became Tennessee) with James and/or David.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Does anyone have any information about Richard's son David Jones, and what became of him and wife Elizabeth after they sold the land in 1784? I am near certain the connected profile of David G. Jones is a completely different man. I have just made a large research notes section on that profile, outlining why and with sources for the "real" David G. Jones. I'd appreciate anything you can give me. He has a son with an existing and un-attached profile, and also a second wife on Wikitree, and I now have him somewhat documented, but do not believe he fits here (see the names of his grandsons). His first wife Jane appears to have been an Anderson. Thanks, Honi

Jones-128565 and Jones-39561 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles represent the same Richard Jones of Louisa Co. and should be merged into the lower profile number or at the least set in an un-merged match to prevent further duplication of children.

Honi, Jones-128565 appears to refer to the same Richard Jones, but my research has determined that he was not married to Ann Simmons. See my comment below. His spouse’s last name is unknown, and his daughter was not Susannah Jones Allen.

Thank you for responding Brian. I did read your research notes, just hoping to cut down on further duplications, of which we have many, and never sure the best way to deal with profiles clearly represent the same individuals, flawed connections, or not. I proposed a merge between the Ann Simmons, removed as wife from this profile, and the duplicate Anne Simmons, dau. of Edmund & Frances, with a note to see this profile for your research. Only Richard's sons John, David (Elizabeth), James (Mary), & widow Ann were named in the 1784 suit, and deed resulting, to divide his estate...still digging. Neither profiles for Susannah Jones offer sources to determine if they could be the same, but have the same death date/location, and my experience being, an Alling was an Allin, is an Allen. Do you have any additional clues? I do believe they might be the same Susannah and as those profiles stand, (with that death loc. & place), it might be proactive to set them in an unmerged match before children are attached & duplicated on both. It's a shame the profile for the attached spouse Clifton Allen is not better sourced (will do that). He was an iconic Baptist minister who left North Carolina for Tennessee in his golden years (1797), but...he was a witness to the will of John Anthony (m. Ursula Jones) with James Jones in 1785 Caswell Co., NC. & proved the will in 1786. Again, still digging. While I've got you on the hook, are you familiar with this Richard Jones? I've adopted and trying to source him.~Honi

I’ve found a book online called “Peter Jones and Richard Jones Genealogies,”but have just started browsing the text. I’m guessing what is in there has already been taken into account by others. But you never know. I’m just looking for clues. Seems odd that there is no paper trail for Richard Jones of Louisa County. There are so many tantalizing dead ends in my tree, but it seems that I am related to half the population of 17th century Virginia.

A number of trees on Ancestry and FamilySearch have Anne Simmons as the wife of Richard Jones and the Reverend Emmanuel Jones as his father. This appears incorrect. The book, "DESCENDANTS OF MORDECAI COOKE, of "Mordecai's Mount" Gloucester Co. Va." states that Rev. Emanuel Jones of Petsworth Parish in Gloucester County had three sons: John, Rev Emmanuel (II), and Dr. Richard.

It further says:

Dr. Richard Jones, died 1784; taxed with 750 acres in 1782, Vestry Petsworth Parish, 1750, "in place of Capt. David .Alexander, deceased." The old Baytop papers contain many of his accounts and bills with his signature. His Executors were son John and Capt. Thomas Baytop; married Ann Sim- mons, daughter of Edward, (died 1727), and Frances Simmons, of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester.

This Richard Jones had seven children, none of whom match the names of Richard Jones of Louisa County. And he did not, it seems, ever live in Louisa County.

Richard Jones of Louisa County was previously attached as the son of Peter Jones, (Jones-6845) born about 1634. He was disconnected because there is no documentation of that relationship. He did, apparently, have a son named Richard.

However, I have substantial DNA in common with several of the descendants of Peter Jones II, (Jones-8083) born 1666, and Mary Batte Jones. One of them, 48cm with the longest segment 21.9cm. Looking at their trees, I cannot find any other common ancestors. I'm inclined to think there is a relationship.

Hi Brian. I've found scattered bits of the life of Dr. Richard Jones, connected a few profiles (merged the two profiles of Ann Simmons, once connected to this Richard). If you have any knowledge or sources to add to his profile, I would really appreciated it. Should we direct to his profile from the research section of this one, where it is noted Ann Simmons has twice been removed? It might encourage others to look for this Richard's real wife.

Honi, I've been looking. The book I mentioned before about the Jone's of Virginia does not point to any connection to Louisa County or Hanover County. Louisa split off from Hanover in 1742. They both lie just above Richmond. The well-known Jones's were mostly to the south of Richmond, Petersburg, Amelia County. Not that any of these counties are that far apart. I suspect that Richard Jones of Louisa County is related to the southside Jones's but I have absolutely no proof other than that I seem to share a substantial amount of dna with several ancestors of Peter Jones II and Mary Batte. I'm from Virginia, but don't live there, and can't scrounge for analog materials in libraries or courthouses down there. I would look in Hanover County, since Richard was born before 1742 when Louisa was formed. In fact, we need to correct the bio, which states that Richard Jones was born in Louisa County in 1712. There was no Louisa County in 1712.

Hi Liz,

Our paths seem to always cross... I looks to me like these Jones folks need a lot of work. The Richard Jones who died about 1780 in Louisa County left a will that mentioned children William Jones, Richard Jones, John Jones, Thomas Jones, James Jones, David Jones, Susannah Alling, and Ursly Anthony. There is no mention of Thorntons. I suspect that the Richard Jones who married Anne Simmons was a different person altogether. Also, the Richard Jones who was a son of Maj. Peter Jones seems to have been nearly a generation younger than this Richard. He can be followed though land and estate records of Amelia County to 1804 when he moved to Tennessee. His wife has a will.

I know that you may not be interested in a deep dive on this family, but I thought I would leave this note in the hopes that people looking at this profile will see that this lineage is suspect.

All the best,

Jason
