George Jones was born in Savannah, the son of Noble Jones. He studied medicine under his father and practiced for several years. He was in the Revolutionary War, where he spent two years as a prisoner of war in an English prison, and served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature, was an Alderman and Mayor of Savannah, judge of the Eastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia, and a member of the U.S. Senate in 1807.

Jones married three times Mary Gibbons (m.1785), Sarah Fenwick (m. 1795) and Eliza Smith (m. 1822).

Legacy

George's grandfather, Noble Jones, owned a large estate known as Wormsloe Plantation. In 1736, Noble Jones obtained a grant for 500 acres that would form the core of Wormsloe. The fortified house that was built on this land was part of a network of defensive structures established by James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia. "Wormsloe" probably refers to Wormslow Hundred, Herefordshire, in the Welsh border country from which the Jones family hailed. George Jones was deeded Wormsloe in 1804. George built a new elaborate home on the property that still stands today.

It was his grandfather, Noble Jones, that built and owned Wormsloe, not Noble Wimberly Jones the father of George.
Great catch! I knew I had forgotten to go back and double check all the Noble names. Correct.
