Biography

Jacob was the son of James and Susannah[1], or Hannah[2], Jones. An Ancestry.com discussion thread suggests his father may have been Captain James Jones and his wife Susannah Randall of Middletown CT, but no sources have yet been found.

On October 4, 1772, Capt Jacob Jones married Rebecca Cole, the daughter of Benjamin Cole and Desire Smith, who were among the first proprietors of Liverpool, Nova Scotia[1]. Their children included:

  1. James, born June 8, 1773, who died October 6, 1774[1]
  2. James, born April 17, 1775, who died in the West Indes on March 30, 1796[1]
  3. Mehitable, born June 21, 1777[1]
  4. Susannah, born February 27, 1779[1], who married Samuel Freeman, son of Joseph and Rebecca (Nickerson) Freeman after 1802
  5. Jacob, Jr, born February 16, 1781, who died March 21, 1783[1] [2]
  6. Randall, born November 4, 1782, who died July 18, 1783[1]
  7. Dorcas, born June 18, 1784[1] [2]
  8. Jacob, Jr, born May 29, 1786[1] [2]
  9. Smith, born August 6, 1788[1], who married Mehitable Chadsey, daughter of Abel[3]
  10. Randall, born January 27, 1792[1]
  11. Mira, born January 13, 1795[1]

Simeon Perkins Diary makes several references to the Jones family, mostly in relation to work, however Simeon notes the sudden death of young Jacob Jr in March 1783. On February 25, 1787, Simeon notes that Rebecca (Mrs. Jones) was converted to the Free Baptists. In 1788, Simeon sold Jacob and Rebecca a house[2]

Jacob Jones died en route to the West Indes on March 2, 1795[1]. Liverpool received the news on Thursday April 23, 1795, and Simeon Perkins noted:[2]

Benajah Collins ... brings ... the Malencholla News that Capt. Jacob Jones, Master of the Schooner Hope, was, on his Outward passage, washed Overboard & Drowned. He was a Valuable man, & Good Neighbour, and will be much missed by his Family.
