Biography

Thomas was born in 1884.[1]

He married Amelia Ethel (preferred name Ethel) Henwood at Scone on 26 Nov 1907 [2] Amelia was the daughter of Samuel and Jane Amelia Florence Henwood, née Chapman and was one of 4 children (1 boy and 3 girls)[3]

Thomas and Amelia had three children:

  1. Florence R in 1908[4]
  2. Amelia P in 1909 [5]
  3. William J in 1911 [6]

Thomas died in 1912 after a short illness[7] As reported in the press:[8]

Sad Death. — An extremely sad death took place in the local Hospital on Wednesday morning, when Mr. Thos. George Jones, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Jones, of this town passed away, after an. illness extending over nearly five, months, during the whole of which he was an inmate of the institution. Straight forward and honorable, and a hard working - young fellow, the deceased — he being only 27 years of age — won the respect of many, and his demise, although not altogether unexpected, came as a great blow to his' relatives & friends. Stricken down with pleurisy in the first instance, fears were expressed of other complications supervening, and though operated on with a view of checking same, and also receiving every possible attention from both the medical and nursing staff, his condition gradually grew worse, the end coming at the time above stated. Another sad phase of the occurrence is that the deceased young fellow leaves behind, besides his sorrowing parents and relatives, a young widow with three children, whose ages range respectively from three years to five months, and upon whom Dame Fortune has not smiled for some considerable time. With the afflicted ones, we tender our sympathy in their irreparable loss. The noon, a large number of friends and relatives following the remains to their last resting place, in the Church of England Cemetery ; the last rites being read by the Rev. F. A. Cadell.

His wife was therefore left to raise her three young children on her own and the whole town rallied to raise almost £100 [equivalent to more than $10,000 in 2017] for them.[9][10][11][12] [13][14]

Ethel eventually remarried and died under another married name.
