Biography

Morton was born in 1747. He died in 1841.

Parents: Hugh Jones 1720 - 1791 and Elizabeth (Morton) Jones 1727 - 1785.

Spouse: Frances (Foster) Jones 1782 - 1844.

Note I found & need to verify: (1) Morton married Frances Foster. She was the sister of Phebe Foster, Elizabeth Foster, and Thomas Foster. Their Father was Thomas Foster. (2) Her sister, Phebe married George Jones, brother to Morton. (3) Her sister, Elizabeth married Benjamin Jones, brother to George & Morton Jones. (4) Thomas married Frances Jones, sister to these brothers. Morton later moved to Duck River, Tennessee.

Heirs of daughter, Frances Foster. Son, Benjamin Jones. A second will dated 5/30/1840 lists the same persons, except the words "heirs of" were omitted before the names of Morton Jones and Frances Foster. Date Proven: 12/6/1841. Per Coffee County Wills, 6/1836 - 8/1906. Original: Book O, page 25. Book 1, page 139. Written 3/23/1840. Mary Jones (who signed with an X) wrote the Court saying that her husband, Gabriel Jones, died intestate; she could not take care of the estate, so she requested the court to appoint her nephew, Isaac H. Roberts to administer it. 4/6/1840.

11/26/1832, Franklin County, Tennessee. Morton Jones, aged 85 states he was born in Orange County, Virginia, 8/10/1747. He entered the service in the fall of 1780 as a resident of Orange County, being drafted for three months in the 4th Virginia Militia under Capt. Jo. Spencer and Lieut. Garland Burley. He was stationed at Fredericksburg, Virginia, the entire term. He returned home after discharge and was called again to serve for 3 months and promoted to Sergeant. He served under Capt. Garland Burley and Lt. Col. Jo. Spencer. He served a third term of 3 months at Portsmouth, where the British who had taken Norfolk tried to attack but were repulsed. He served a fourth term under General Washington. He was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis and saw him surrender his sword to Gen. Washington. He was personally acquainted with Gen. John Green and Gen Anthony Wayne. He moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina, in 1794. In 1818, he removed to Bedford County, Tennessee for 7 years.

2/25/1840 Coffee County, Tennessee, Morton Jones, aged about 92, states he and his brother Benjamin, who was 2 1/2 years younger than himself, were raised together in Orange County, Virginia. Benjamin married Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Foster, 2 or 3 years before the war. They were married in Orange County by a minister named Wingate, at the Glebe, as the residence of the parson was then called. They had 1 or perhaps 2 children before the war. Per Revolutionary War Pension Applications from Franklin County, Tennessee. The book, Descendants of Hugh Jones. By Bobbie Jones McLane and Richard Steele, shows a daughter, Frances Foster Jones, who married Lindsey Triplett in 1833. This may be confused with Capt. Francis Foster Jones mentioned as a son in the Franklin County Historical Review, 1/1979.
