Biography

Samuel was born in 1822. In 1850, he is living with his parents and sister (Ellinder) in Giles County, VA. He married Margaret Vance in 1852. In 1860, he (aged 38, a farm laborer) and Margaret (aged 26) are living in Monroe, Virginia with four children aged 6 and under. In 1870, he is farming and estimates his estate as $900. Samuel and Margaret now have 8 children at home in Greenbrier WVA, ranging in age from 6 months to 15 years old. In 1880, Samuel was a farmer aged 58, living in Second Creek, WVA with his wife Margaret aged 48 and seven of their ten children, ages 5 to 20. According to the census, all except the youngest could read and write. Three of the children had attended school. Their community included several Bostic and Hokes families, who were considered "cousins" even in the 1950s family lore. In his last will, Samuel left land to each of his three sons, and $50 each to his four daughters. Samuel died in 1888 of measles. He is buried in Organ Cave, WVA with his wife Margaret.
