Obituary

Another of Wellington's old identities died yesterday—Mr. George Jones, of 132, Hutt-road, Petone. Mr. Jones was born in Romford, Essex, in, May 1846. After serving his apprenticeship as an engineer, he came to Australia, and built the Brisbane Railway Station and a large bridge at Emu Plain, New South Wales. Later he came to New Zealand and established a foundry at Nelson for Messrs. Edmonds, Bennett, and Symons, and afterwards acted as engineer to the company. During a period of dull trade he went on a successful prospecting trip round Mount Arthur. On his return he was married to Miss Emma Hollis, of Nelson. Coming to Wellington, he built the first gas-holder at Courtenay-place, about 1871, and was in charge of the erection of the patent slip at Evans Bay, of which he was the first engineer in charge. His next engagement was with the Wellington Harbour Board. After several other engagements, he joined the New Zealand Railways at Petone, and was transferred to Westport. Coming back to Petone after six years, he engaged in the wood and coal business in 1897. He leaves a widow and eight children, twenty-two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, the daughters and sons being Mesdames T. Stokes (Invercargill), Reay (Trentham), Walker (Woodville), H. G. Heyward (Petone), and Councillor R. H. Jones (Petone), Messrs. A. G. Jones (Petone), R. H. Jones (Woodville), and H. C. Jones (Petone). (Evening Post, April 29, 1922)
