Charles[1] and his older sister (Mary Ann) were both baptised on 3 November 1852. Their parents were Charles Jones (abt.1814-1878) and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Hornery (1820-1875) and the rites were carried-out by Rev. White (James Smith White (1822-1902)) at the Presbyterian Church at Whittingham. This is around five kilometres south of Singleton and a similar distance east of Mt Thorley. Mary Ann was recorded as having been born at 'Barwin' in May 1847 while Charles's birth was shown to have been in October 1850.
In 1985, Gertrude Annie (Smith) Jones (1893-1989) (Charles' daughter-in-law) recalled that Charles was,
The places 'Barwin', 'Barwin River', 'Barwon' (as recorded in the Baptismal record for Charles Jr's younger brother George) or 'Barwan' (as on some maps of the time) probably all refer to the same part of the country. This was probably an extensive pastoral 'run' which could well have stretched from the Barwon River districts (to as far as Mungindi in the north, through Walget, Brewarrina, Nyngan to Dubbo in the the west) to Cassilis or Merriwa (in the south-east).
It is noted that as well as what is noted above for Charles, his brother James was recorded as being born at 'Barwon River' in 1855, and his siblings Ruben and Elizabeth were both born at "Burrowa" in 1859 and "Boorooma" in 1862 respectively. This is considered to most likely be Old Boorooma Station on the Barwon River [the current address is 43503 Kamilaroi Hwy, Walgett NSW 2832] as Elizabeth's birth is informed about five weeks after her birth in Wee Waa. This property was owned at that time by the White family (including James White (1828-1890)) and Charles Sr is known to have worked for that family at times.
According to the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales, Barwon is,
and further notes that 'Baawan' is,
The name of the river and locality first receives official recognition in 1847 when, in the first of his two 1847 maps of Australia's east, John Arrowsmith records the previously named Karaula or Darling River as being the Karaula or Barwan River.
On 30 Mar 1871, at age 18, Elizabeth married Charles Jones (1850-1922) at Bellevue (which later became the village of Gundy).[2] In the following years their family grew to include:
Family gatherings must have been very 'interesting' for Charles and Elizabeth as the Jones and Riley families were close both geographically and relationally. Specifically:
Charles died on 25 Feb 1922 at the age of 71.[3] His obituary appeared in the Scone Advocate as follows:[4]
His death certificate notes that he was both 'old age pensioner' and 'farmer' who had suffered from tuberculosis for the 12 years prior. It also confirms that he married Elizabeth at age 21.[5] Charles was buried on 26 February 1922. Charles and Elizabeth (Riley) are buried together in a shared plot[6] in the cemetery at Gundy in New South Wales. Interestingly, just in front of their grave is the headstone for Sarah (Riley) Wilkinson who was Elizabeth's sister but who married Charles's father just before he died and then when on to marry Joe Wilkinson.
Interestingly, Charles Jr's Baptism Certificate does not record a place of birth but simply shows his parents' abode as 'Barwin' and Charles' occupation as 'Stock keeper'. Charles Death Certificate in 1922 (informed by his son-in-law) shows his place of birth as Wollombi, but the Birth Certificate of his son Henry in 1886 shows his father's place of birth as 'Barwin River'. The death certificate is also wrong in a number of other respects so, on balance, Wollombi is considered to be probably not correct.
In fact, Charles' death certificate in 1922 is problematic in so many ways that it almost begars belief. There is no doubt that the subject of this profile is the Charles born by Charles Jones (Sr) and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Hornery although neither his parents' names or his place of birth are even remotely correct. Perhaps this is explainable as his mother and father died 47 and 44 years earlier respectively, around 20 years before the informant, William Cooper married Charles' eldest daughter Selina. However, it does not explain where the alleged parents' names and Charles place of birth came from. Are they so wildly inaccurate as to suggest that the errors were intentional?
