Thomas Jones's father died when he was just 3 yrs old. He then apprenticed at a tailor's shop in Wales when he was 11 (1814) until he was 16 (1819). When young Thomas was 18, he sailed to America with his mother and step-father.
They landed in Baltimore and he stayed there a bit until he decided to head west, to Ohio. He located in Delaware where he opened a tailor's shop--the only tailor for a time--and he often received orders for clothing from a distance of sixty miles and even made clothes for the local native Indians.
