Biography

John Owen Jones Sr was born in 1837 in Wales. With three other family members, he migrated to Victoria, Australia on the ship "Beulah", arriving in December 1852. He initially settled at Kamarooke, near Bendigo and later mined and farmed around the Alexandra, Growlers Gully, Merton, Gaffney's Creek and Spring Creek areas. John Owen Sr was quite successful in his farming and particularly mining in the Growlers Gully area, (known as the Bonnie Doon Hills). They were a very private family who kept to themselves, evidently to conceal the origins of their wealth and the fact they were finding gold. John Owen Sr retired around 1900 to Manningtree Road, Hawthorn (Melbourne). He also owned a property called "Ty Gwynn" at 19 Elwood St, Brighton, where he passed away on July 28, 1915.[1] [2]
