Biography

Rebecca Caroline "Caroline" was born about 1833 in Monroe County. She was living with her parents in Cleveland, Bradley Co., TN during the 1850 Census. Caroline married Ransom Adolphus "Ransom" Jones about 1851. Ransom was born 17 Nov. 1821 in Rutherford Co., NC. Caroline and Ransom lived early on in the community of Villanow, Walker Co., GA. According to Mary Nan Campbell Greeson and Sybil Reed Tate, Ransom worked as a blacksmith at his home on the northwest corner of the highway intersection in Villanow. Metal bits from his blacksmith shop can still be found there amidst the poplar trees. The 1860 Census indicates that Caroline and Ransom lived in the Armuchee East District of Walker County. This census lends support to the view that they lived on the northwest corner of the highway intersection in Villanow. The 1870 Census shows they had moved just a few miles north on Lafayette Road to the community of Reo. As shown by the census, they were next-door neighbors to James and Polly Hammontree, who are known by their descendants to have lived at the northwest corner of Lafayette Road and Reo Road. By the time of the 1880 Census, Caroline and Ransom had again moved a few miles north to the Trickum District of Whitfield County where they lived in McCutcheon Cove (also spelled McCutchen), about eight miles west of Dalton (about a fifteen-mile drive). Here they were certainly among the first Hammontree family members to meet the family of John and Margaret Caldwell who moved into McCutcheon Cove at least by 1854. Several marriages occurredduring that time between the Hammontree and Caldwell families. Among other marriages in the extended family, Caroline and Ransom had a son who married a Caldwell daughter, and they had a granddaughter who married a Caldwell grandson.

Caroline and Ransom were the parents of eight children, all born in Georgia, except the third, who was born in Bradley Co., TN. These children were: John Crawford "John," born 4 Oct. 1852, married Nancy Louise "Nan" Caldwell (the daughter of John and Margaret Caldwell), died 24 Dec. 1932 in Whitfield Co., GA, buried in Dunagan Cemetery; James Graves "James," born 25 Mar. 1855, married Jerusa Jane Gaut on 24 Dec. 1874 in Cleveland, Bradley Co., TN, died 7 Nov. 1912 in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA; Theodocia Myra Jane "Docia," born 11 May 1857, married Charles Borax Capehart on 29 Dec. 1875 in Whitfield County (their daughter Mary Annie "Annie" married Charles Marcus Reed, the son of Mary Frances Caldwell Reed and the grandson of John and Margaret Caldwell), died 22 Feb. 1944 in Houston Valley, Whitfield County, buried in Woodstation Cemetery, Catoosa Co., GA; Nancy Olivia, born 3 Nov. 1859 in McCutcheon Cove, Whitfield County, married John Bartow Capehart on 27 Nov. 1881 in Walker Co., GA, died 21 Jan. 1930 in Houston Valley, Whitfield County, buried in Bethel Cemetery, Woodstation, Catoosa County; Cinthia Rebecca Alice, born 7 May 1863, married William Sam "Bud" Brock on 14 Jul. 1887 in Walker County, died 29 Jul. 1949 in East Armuchee, Walker County, buried in Concord Cemetery, Walker County, Mary Elizabeth A. "Mollie," born 28 Sep. 1866, married Daniel A. Houston on 11 Mar. 1888 in Walker County, died 28 Jun. 1895 in McCutcheon Cove, Whitfield County, buried in Dunagan Cemetery; Francis Marion Adolphus "Adolphus," born 25 Dec. 1868, married Cornelia Ann "Nelia" Nuckolls on 5 Aug. 1900 in Walker County, died 4 Dec. 1911 in Whitfield County, buried in Dunagan Cemetery; and Julia Caroline, born 14 Jun. 1871, married William Alfred Houston on 15 Dec. 1889 in Walker County, died 11 Jun. 1937 in Walker County, buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Caroline and Ransom's daughter Mollie Jones Houston was murdered 28 Jun. 1895, about one mile southeast of their home in McCutcheon Cove while walking along the ridge to the country store. Caroline died about 1897 in Whitfield County, and Ransom on 12 May 1898 in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN. Ransom is buried in Woodstation Methodist Church Cemetery in Woodstation, Catoosa Co., GA. Caroline is buried beside her daughter Mollie Jones Houston in Dunagan Cemetery in Rocky Face, Whitfield County. Also buried with them is the family of Caroline's son, Adolphus Jones. Caroline and her family are buried in a row alongside her brother William Robinson Hammontree and the family of his son, Willaford Hammontree.

Buried, Wood Station Cemetery, Ringgold, Catoosa Co., Ga., USA
