Disambiguation

Robert Jordan 1562-1589 of this profile, proposed as father of Capt Samuel Jordan, Ancient Planter, and Rev Robert Jordan,1612-1679 of Maine, husband of Sarah Winter Jordan are being confused one for the other. Elements of fact for each Robert have been combined into one profile that is confusing and inaccuarate.

Evidence

Documentation exists that Robert Jordan, proposed father of Samuel Jordan, Ancient Planter, died in or abt 1589 at Dorset, England and was possibly buried at St. Nicholas Church, Gloucestershire, England. There is no evidence that he immigrated to Virginia and his death date would make that unlikely. [2] [3]

Note: Robert Jordan is documented as having been buried St Nicholas Church, Gloucestershire, England. Was he buried there and if so, what was his connection to Gloucestershire ? Could is be that he was from Gloucestershire and not from Dorset? There is a birth record for a Robert Jorden, christened July 23, 1564 at Newland, Gloucestershire, England, son of a Walter Jorden. [4] Could this be the Robert Jordan of this profile ? More research needs to be done into this question.

The Rev Robert Jordan that married Sarah Winter of Maine is not the same person as Robert Jordan, proposed father of Capt Samuel Jordan. [5] [6]

(Rev) Robert Jordan (son of Edward Jordan) was born January 12, 1611/12 in St. Swithin, Worcester, England, and died July 28, 1679 in Portsmouth, NH. He married Sarah Winter in Richmonds Isl., ME, [5] In his will he mentions a son named Samuel. See photo

Rev Robert Jordan and Sarah Winter are said to have had six known children, all sons. Hannah Jordan Aston is not a child of this couple. [5] Their children were, John, Robert, Dominicus, Jedediah, Samuel and Jeremiah. [6]

Findings

Based on notes in change history it appears that this profile was originally created as Robert Jordan 1562-1589, father of Capt Samuel Jordan, Ancient Planter of Virginia. It appears that information from the profile of Rev Robert Jordan 1611-1679, of Maine was added later by mistake or an erroneous merge.

Disputed Child

Sarah (Jordan) Aston said to be the daughter of Robert Jordan and Sarah Winter was born about 1600 - 1610 at Eccles,,Lancashire,England. A Geni.com pedigree indicates her father is not Robert but Richard Jordan of Eccles, Lancashire,England and her mother is unknown [7]. There is no evidence to support either as her father.

Rev Robert Jordan that married Sarah Winter fathered 6 sons and no daughters.

Robert Jordan, father of Capt Samuel Jordan is said to have died c 1589 at Dorset, England more than 10 years before Hannah's birth.

Hannah was said to have been born in Lancashire, England. Neither of the Robert Jodans proposed as her father is known to have had ties to Lancahire.

There is evidence that Hannah (Jordan) Aston is the sister of Col George Jordan, of Surry county, Virginia. Colonel George Jordan was one of Surry County, Virginia's most prominent citizens. [8] [9] Their parents are often said to be Arthur Henry Jordon and Mary (Rawlings) Jordan, however this has not been proved. The parents of Col George Jordan, and Hannah are currently unknown. See profile of Hannah (Jordan) Aston for more detail.

There appear to be two people mixed together in this profile.

Jordan-8171 and Jordan-1189 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate. different birth date but same death date. same parents listed in the bio of Jordan-8171

Documentation indicates an immigration date of 1622 to Virginia however the death date of 1605 makes that impossible. Proper sources would help to resolve the issues with this profile.

The information presented here is problematic. First, it is impossible for Robert Jordan to have died in Henrico County in 1605 -- two years before the Jamestown settlement was established and a bit more before Henrico County was itself established.

Also I doubt Sarah Winters was this Robert Jordan's wife, as the Robert Jordan who married Sarah Winters settled in New England, not Virginia.

While it is possible there were two Robert Jordan/Sarah Winter couples, I'd rather see some documentation to show that particular couple exists (the New England couple is documented).
