Arthur Jordan lived near his father, George Jordan III and brother in Northampton County, North Carolina for many years. When his father moved in 1750, Arthur stayed behind for several years until he could get his affairs together, then he moved to the Granville area about 1762 just after his mother died. The first evidence of Arthur Jordan in Granville County was the listing of his name in that county's 1762 tax list. He raised a large family. Five years before his move to Granville, he received a Granville Grant of 609 acres in the Nutbush-Anderson Swamp area of Granville County, near his brother's land. He later sold this land and moved a short distance to the south on the Granville line with Bute (Warren) County on Sandy Creek. Arthur Jordan's age was listed as 72 in the 1789 tax list of Granville County, perhaps to clarify that he was over the legal age of collection. This gives a birth date for Arthur as 1716-17.
In a deed dated July 17, 1746 in Brunswick County, Virginia, Alexander Southerland sold 300 acres to Arthur Jordan Sr. on lines of the orphans of Joseph Turner and James Jordan, and on the south side of Fountain's Creek. This tract had been patented by John Bradford (900 acres) in 1727 and had been conveyed to Southerland by Edward Green a month earlier. This deed was witnessed by George, John, and Arthur Jr. Jordan (Brunswick DB. 3-211 to 3-213)
The proof of Arthur Jordan's marriage to Elizabeth Turner lies in the will of James Turner (1752) who gave his sister Elizabeth Jordan 150 acres in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
Arthur Jordan's will was dated 15 December 1792 and recorded in August of 1793 in Granville County. He named his wife Elizabeth W. Jordan. He gave her 1/3 of his manor plantation, a slave for life, what she had before her marriage, 6 cows, and a horse, saddle and bridle. To son Thomas, Arthur gave the other 2/3 of his home plantation. To each daughter Sarah Neal and Elizabeth Daniel, he gave a slave. To daughters Martha, Penelope, Jane, and Charlotte, he gave the rest. To son Nimrod Jordan, he gave a mare and horse. Arthur named his wife and sons Marcellus and Thomas as executors along with William King (probable step son). Witnesses were William Gilliam and William King (WB, 3-63,64).[1]
Arthur's father George Jordan III and Arthur's mother Sarah Hunt.
