Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Arthur Jordan II was a Virginia colonist.

Arthur Jordan, the brother of George Jordan, was born about 1629 in England,[1] He married Elizabeth Bevin on 1654 in Surry County, Virginia, daughter of Richard Bevin and Mary.[2]

From the JORDAN JOURNAL

Henry Browne sponsored George Jordan's arrival into the colony from England. George was the older brother of Arthur Jordan.

ARTHUR JORDAN is the ancestral head of the Jordan family in America. (pp. 2A5-2A11).

Arthur Jordan apparently had a strong sense of fairness and right, as he saw it, and would contest any who challenged otherwise. He can almost be viewed, during the Bacon civil war, as one who sat waiting in his doorway with two muskets across his lap. Arthur Jordan was a most respected man in the community and was not bothered by the rebels, even though his brother George shifted political sides in public during the hostilities.
Arthur's birthdate can be pinned down to a two year span. He made at least three depositions in Surry County where his age was mentioned. The first record dated November 9, 1659 (R.B. 1-143) listed Arthur's age as "32 or there about". This would put his birth date within the years 1626-1627. The second deposition was made July 3, 1677, which listed Arthur's age as 50 years (R.B. 2-131). This would again give a birth date as 1626-1627. The last deposition was made September 1, 1691 (Deed Book 4-228) when Arthur's age was given as "65 years of there about" which would give a birth date of 1625-1626.
Arthur Jordan may have arrived in Virginia about the same time as his brother, George, possibly on the same ship. Arthur Jordan's name was used by John Moone on a patent dated October 21, 1635. Arthur Jordan was about 7-8 years old when he arrived in Virginia.[3]

Death

He died Jan. 3 ,1698 in Surry County, Virginia.[4] [5] His will dated September 24, 1698 - Probated January 3, 1699

On the backside was written: And of this my last will and testament I make my son River Jordan my full and whole executor and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and annull all and other former testaments which bargained bequeath and entered by me and on my wise before this front named will & bequeath rectifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament. Signed sealed published pronounced[6]

Marriage

He married Elizabeth (Bevin) Jordan in 1654.[5]

Issue:

  1. Thomas Jordan, b. 1655, d. 1685.[5] (He is mentioned by name in his uncle George Jordan's will.)
  2. James Jordon, b. 1657, d. 1697.[5]
  3. George Jordan II, b. 1660, Surry County, Virginia, d. July 1718, Virginia.[5]
  4. River Jordan, b. Abt. 1661, d. 1700.[5]
  5. Elizabeth (Jordan) Washington, b. Abt. 1664, d. 1735[5]Book 1691-1713, p. 193).

There must have also been three other sons, because Arthur's brother George mentions "I give to my brother, Arthur Jordan, to be equally divided amongst my seaven nephews and my neece Eliz. Jordan, only a mourning ring to himself..."

I believe there is some confusion on WikiTree between Flood-231 and Fludd-4. Both are named Elizabeth and born in 1656 in Surry, Virginia Colony according to their profiles. Flood-231 is the daughter of John Flood, Jr (Flood-7) and Ann Flood (Unknown-238800) while Fludd-4 is the daughter of John Flood, Sr (Flood-101) and Fortune Jordan (Jordan 2010). Given the commonality of names, dates and places of birth, and father's name, confusion seems a likely possibility. I am an 8th great grandson of John Flood, Sr (Flood-101). When I first discovered this relationship on Family Search several years ago, my 8xgreat grandmother was given as Fortune Jordan (Jordan 2010). I had just had my DNA tested (Family TreeDNA) and decided to see if I had any matches with Flood and/or Jordan as family surnames in the FTDNA database. Indeed, I foumd numerous matches with those family surnames.

My descent from John Flood, Sr is via Elizabeth Flood (his daughter or granddaughter?) and Nicholas Smith (Smith-39623). When I connected with this branch on WikiTree I noticed that the Elizabeth Flood who was married to Nicholas Smith is Flood-231, daughter of John Flood, Jr (not Fludd-4, daughter of John Flood, Sr). If this new assignment is correct then my 8th great grandmother is Margaret Finch (Saywell-9), not Fortune Jordan (Jordan -231). Because of a genetic analysis that I will address shortly, I suspect that Flood-231 and Fluud-4 are the same person with the spousal assignment of Flood-231 and the parental assignments of Fluud-4. If they are really two separate people, then I suspect that Fluud-4 should have Nicholas Smith as spouse instead of Flood-231.

Genetic Analysis: Among my FTDNA matches are 4 individuals with Flood and/or Jordan ancestry who share with me a small segment on chromosome-10. These segments range from 2.07 cM (centa-Morgan) to 3.47 cM. They are too small for triangulation, but given my selection crtteria and their small sizes it is highly unlikely that they would not all match my maternal branch of Ch-10 (the branch that includes my Flood/Jordan ancestry). If that is the case then this commonly shared segment should be inherited from a common shared ancestor. Among my matches is one individual (Indv 1) whose pedigree tree includes John Flood, Sr and Fortune Jordan. This suggests that the segment in question comes from either John Flood, Sr or Fortune Jordan (provided our two pedigrees don't intersect in some other position). Another of the matches (Indv 2) descends from Arthur Jordan (Jordan-2932, Fortune Jordan's brother) and does not include any Flood surnames in their tree. That would suggest that my segment comes from Fortun Jordan (provided that the trees of my FTDNA matches are correct). I will henceforth call this segment the Jordan segment. Two other individuals (Indv3 and Indv 4) according to their trees descend from John Flood, Sr and Margaret Finch via their daughter Mary (Flood) Briggs (Flood-75). This would seem to invalidate my segment assignment to Fortune Jordan until, that is, one realizes that Mary Briggs was also married to John Washington (Washington-1017) and their son Richard (Washington-366) married Elizabeth Jordan (Jordan-3394), the niece of Fortune Jordan. If Indv 3 and Indv 4 both also descend from Richard and Elizabeth (which is indeed the case) then their possession of the Jordan segment under study is explained. Now this genetic data that I have just described is understandable only if I am descended from John Flood, Sr and Fortune Jordan (a descent via John Flood, Jr would not include any Jordan genes) , hence my suspicions regarding Flood-231 and Fluud-4. I will wait for the reactions of other profile managers before proposing a merger of these two individuals. If anyone would like to see more details of my genetic analysis they may email me at [email address removed] and I will respond with individual identies and graphics (it seems that I cannot paste a graphic in this comment).

UPDATE: After a series of email exchanges with Paul Gierzewski (thanks Paul) and further genetic analysis, I have been able to justify my possession of the Jordan segment without having Fortune Jordan in my pedigree. I still support the merging of Flood-231 and Fludd-4 but the change of parental assignment of Flood-231 is no longer compelling (ie eliminate Fludd-4).

What documentation exists that shows Thomas Jordan, son, is the son of Arthur? Since he would have predeceased his father he would not be in the will. Are there any records to document his birth? or Death? Boddie (Southside Virginia Families I:168-170) gives the Thomas Jordan who marries 1/ Jane Browne and 2/ Lucy Corker as the son of Thomas Jordan, not Arthur. Boddie also gives the lineage Thomas->Thomas in Historical Southern Families XI:265. I'm asking the questions because no matter which lineage you look at there are date issues.

The Lashley/Lasley family of Surry Co. Virginia were close to the Jordans. There are many documents with the Lashleys and Jordans together. This is the earliest document I have found of the two families being listed together. The document is a 1677 Surry, Co. Tithable states : " Mr. Arthur Jordan hath at Blackwater James Jordan, George Jordan, Patrick Lashley and John Gully."

Jordan-2923 and Jordon-100 appear to represent the same person because: The last name should be Jordan not Jordon, they have the same data, same wife. They should be merged.

Jordon-100 and Jordan-11471 appear to represent the same person because: The spouses and father are the same. The don is off by 3 yrs or so..but I think he's a duplicate.
Jordon-100 and Jordan-2923 do not represent the same person because: One is born in England, the other Virginia. Looks like two different people, or the place of birth needs correcting.

Jordan-2923 and Jordan-5594 appear to represent the same person because: same dates and names.

Jordan-2015 and Jordon-100 appear to represent the same person because: Arthur Jordan Jr., Jordan-2015 had himself listed as his father, also born in 1629. I corrected his father, so now these two profiles can be merged. The only exception to everything else matching is one name is spelled Jordon, and the other Jordan. Thanks!

Jordon-100 and Jordan-2015 are not ready to be merged because: Jr and Sr Arthur need to be fixed in their place
