Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
William Jordan is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A063051.

William was born in 1750 and passed away in 1817.[1][2]He is the son of Charles Jordan and Hellenah Unknown. [3]

Some online sources say that he was born in Goochland County, and others say he was born in Lunenburg County. [4] [5]

"Marriage Bonds in Goochland County, Va.," as found in Vol. 7, page 106, William & Mary Col. Quarterly:

Nov. 16th., 1771, William Jordan, son of Charles Jordan, to Elizabeth Woodson, daughter of Joseph Woodson; security, Matthew Jordan, Joseph Woodson's letter of consent; Charles Jordan's letter of consent."

In the "Register of St. James Parish, Goochland County, Va., as given in William & Mary Quar., Vol. 15, p. 119, we find under "Births" William Jordan and Elizabeth Woodson, Woodson, born Dec. 27th, 1772. No other entry of birth to this couple is found and it is probable that Elizabeth (Woodson) Jordan died very soon after the birth of her son Woodson....[6] [7]

Father Charles Jordan's will, DB 10, p 437, Goochland Co, VA written May 7 1773, proved May 16, 1774[8]
Names: Wife: Hellenah; and Children: Charles Jordan, James Jordan, Matthew Jordan, William Jordan and Elizabeth Soblet
Executors: his three sons Charles, James and WIlliam Jordan
Witnesses: Samuel Jordan, Ambrose Stodghill, John Woodson

CAPTAIN WILLIAM JORDAN married (2nd.) LUCY STITH, b. 3/12/1761; md. June 15, 1780.

Major William Jordan appears in the 1791 tax list in Campbell County, Virginia. There is also a “Marthew Jurdin,” who may be his brother.[9]

In the 1810 Census, there were two William Jordans listed as living in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky (just east of and adjacent to Breckinridge County, where William died.)

The first family has a William Jordan of the correct age:

1 Male age 45 or over (born 1765 or earlier) 1 Female age 45 or over 6 Slaves 1 Male age 16-25 1 Male under 10 1 Female under 10

But who was this other, younger, William Jordan? William Jordan and Lucy Smith did not list a son named William in their will.

1 Male age 26-44 (born between 1766-1784) 1 Female 26-44 1 Male 16-25 1 Female 16-25 2 Females 10-15 3 Females under 10

I do not believe they should be merged. There isn't evidence that the father of Covith, Pleasant and the younger William Jordan is the William Jordan who married Elizabeth Woodson & Lucy Stith. They were living in the same county, they are not listed with the other children in William's will and DNA indicates they are from different families -- the three brothers being from the line of Jonas Jordan.

Jordan-16737 and Jordan-255 do not represent the same person because: Nothing in common

A. (Morman) Tuinstra, you have listed that Elizabeth Woodson died on this profile after the birth of her son Woodson. On other trees on Ancestry they say that Elizabeth married William Jordan November 16, 1771. Then she married William Johnson December 14, 1784, so I guess she lived on a while longer. I have also posted this in the comments on Elizabeths profile.

Hmm....interesting! That would mean either 1) Elizabeth Woodson and William Jordan divorced, which was not super common.... or 2) Elizabeth Woodson's husband William Jordan died in Goochland or Henrico....and the William Jordan who married Lucy Stith in Bedford County is another man entirely, who coincidentally had a son named Woodson Jordan.

By the way, I think I found the source for the information that Elizabeth Woodson married twice: "Historical genealogy of the Woodsons and their connections" by H.M. Woodson. Found on GoogleBooks.

I think I may have found something that clears this up.

Apparently, Joseph Woodson (son of Robert) had a son named Joseph. We will call them Joseph, Sr. and Joseph, Jr.

Joseph Sr was probably the father of the Elizabeth who married William Jordan. Elizabeth's brother, Joseph, Jr., also had a daughter named Elizabeth, and I bet she was the one who married William Johnson in 1784.

Found some more information: "14 December 1784. WILLIAM JOHNSON and Elizabeth Woodson, dau. of Mary Woodson. Sur. Pearin Redford. Wit. Benjamin Woodson. p. 30." Note that she was a daughter of Mary. The Elizabeth of this profile is the daughter of Elizabeth.

I also removed Jacobus Covith Jordan (Jordan-231) as a son of William and Lucy Jordan, as there is no evidence he was their son.
