Research Notes

The death of Joseph Smith has not been determined. His widow Sarah Smith appears to have again married to Humphrey Park, before 6th October 1790, per Perquimans Monthly Meeting Women´s Minutes, 1780-1797.[6] The family history of Hosea Smith tells us his father John moved back to Perquimans County and resided with his mother after 1783, before buying land on Cyprus Springs near Cyprus Bridge.

Humphrey joined Piney MM c. 1761, married, was a widower. He was enumerated quite close to Samuel Smith in the North Carolina, U.S., State Census lists, compiled for year 1784 thru 1787, so would have been neighbor to Joseph Smith. He signed with his mark, name variously spelled Park, Parks, or Parke. Sarah Park was living during the division of Joseph Smith's estate in 1794.[7] Sarah Park appears to be in Women's Meeting records as late as 1795. The will of Humphrey Park, dated 25 Nov 1802, named a daughter Sarah Park but does not name a widow, indicating the Sarah Smith he'd married was deceased. He bequeathed a cow to John Smith, but does not identify that John's father (Sarah's son John Smith was dead but there was a grandson John Smith). (Perquimans Co. NC WB E, p. 182).

Mary Smith, daughter of Joseph & Sarah Smith, was first married to Malachi Jones in 1755, secondly to Foster Toms in 1777. Only the heirs of Foster Toms, John Smith, and Joseph's widow Sarah Parks are named in the division of his estate.
