Biography

Joseph was born in 1828. He is the son of David Jordan and Delphia Minchew. He passed away in 1899. [1]

Joseph Jordan was born on January 7, 1828 in Emanuel County, Georgia, the 6th child of David Jordan and Delphia Minchew. His family moved to Ware County shortly after he was born, as his parents show up in the 1830 Ware County census living with six children. He married Rebecca Miller before 1851. She was born about 1830, the daughter of Henry Miller and Rebecca Cassa (or Casser). Their children were:

1. Henry b. 12/11/1851, d. 6/27/1933. Married Louisa Littles, b. 2/4/1851, d. 4/27/1930. Henry buried Hephzibah Cem., Ware Co., GA.

2. William b. 10/5/1854, d. 9/27/1934. Married Mary Mollie King b.10/4/1857, d. 1/7/1916, dau. of Hester Dryden and Wm. Harris King. Both buried Old Jordan Cem.

3. Elizabeth b. 10/15/1858, d. 9/2/1932. Married Timothy Harris King 12/24/1874, b.12/27/1853, d. 2/4/1932, son of Hester Dryden and Wm. Harris King. Both bur. Waresboro Cem.

4. Phoebe b. 12/25/1860, d. 12/24/1914. Married Henry Cersey 1/11/1891.

5. Matthew b. 04/30/1863, d. 11/3/1936. Married Martha Waldron 1/26/1882.

6. Serena b. 5/13/1864, d. 4/25/1967. Married Madison L. Roberts5/26/1895.

7. Tobitha b. 10/20/1865,d. 12/23/1908. Married William A. King12/20/1882, b. 4/12/1861, d. 4/14/1939, son of Hester Dryden and Wm. Harris King. Bur. Hephzibah Cem.

8. Randall b. 1868, d. 7/24/1936. Single.

9. Alfred B. b. 7/22/1872, d. 1/03/1953. Married Hettie Ella Thornton 6/26/1892, b. 4/10/1874, d. 10/22/1935, dau. of Nancy Williamson and James A. Thornton, both bur. Hephzibah Cem.


On October 1, 1861, Joseph Jordan enlisted in Company H, 26th Georgia Infantry as Private, along with his brother Abraham, Abraham's son David, as well as Henry Turner who was married to Joseph's sister Ellen. On May 1, 1862 at Tebeauville, Joseph enlisted in Company G, 4th Georgia Cavalry for 3 years, or the war. Enlisting on the same day and into the same regiment was his brother Randall, and their nephew David. Joseph's military records state "Present to 30 June 1864 except 7 - 15 April 1863: detailed to go to Ware County for a horse, and again on the 25th: detached to procure horses for the company, July - August 1863: on picket, January - February 1864: no record. Paroled 19 May 1865 at Thomasville. 5 ft, 3 inches, blue eyes, dark hair and complexion."

After the War, he returned to Ware County where he was a farmer. He applied for and was granted his Soldier's Pension from 1897 until he died, after which his wife Rebecca applied for and was granted her Widow's Pension, assumingly up until her death. Joseph Jordan died December 30, 1899 and his wife Rebecca died about 1915. Both are buried in the family cemetery known as the Old Jordan Littles Cemetery in Ware County
