Biography

Article from 1892 History of Saginaw and Bay Counties, Michigan

"Capt. John W. Jordan, who is an old sailor of thirty year's experience was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, November 26, 1839. His father, Mills Jordan, was a native of Virginia as was also his grandfather, who was a soldier in the War of 1812 and a wealthy planter, belonging to the F. F. V's. He became disgusted with slavery and gave his slaves free papers, bringing them with him on his removal to Ohio. He engaged in the banking business in the Buckeye State and there died.

"The father of our subject was married in Ohio where he followed the trade of carpenter and joiner, dying in Akron, that State, in 1847. He was a Whig in politics and in religion a Congregationalist. His wife whose maiden name was Catherine Bascomb, was born in County Donegal, Ireland, her parents being natives of Scotland. After her parents' death which occurred when she was quite young, she came with her uncle to this country and resided in Albany until twelve year of age, then removing to Cuyahoga Falls. She died in 1854, leaving five children of whom four are living. Of this family our subject is the second child and only son." [1]

Personal Recollections from John Russell Clark, grandson of Mills Jordan

"Mills C. Jordan, my maternal Grandfather, was born Sept. 10, 1898 in Southampton County, Virginia and died on Nov. 10, 1846.

"Catherine Bascom, my maternal Grandmother was born on June 17, 1821in DONEGAL, IRELAND and died Feb. 9, 1854.

"Mills G. Jordan and Catherine Bascom were married on June 15, 1835."

I have not seen evidence for his full name being William, so I have removed it and used only Mills. - A. Tuinstra

Mills G. Jordan and John Jordan (probably his father) were both witnesses of the will of John Carr in Southampton County in 1820 or 1821 (hard to read the date). [2][3]

(Note: John R. Clark's typed recollections appear to spell Mills' middle initial "C." in the first instance and "G." in the second instance.)

From Burial Records posted on Find A Grave:

“45 years old, died of chill fever.”

“Aged 45 yrs, 5 mos, 6 days. the age may vary a few days but his brother thinks it is correct”

(Note: Evidence that Mills had at least one brother. This may be John Clements Jordan, who lived near him.)
