Biography

ANDRE JORDAN Status : Immigrant

Birth : 1731-11-24 St-Saturnin, Cazouls-les-Beziers, ev. Beziers, Languedoc (ar. Beziers, Herault)[1]

André Jourdan was born on 24 November 1731, baptized on the 28th in Cazouls-les-Beziers (St-Saturnin), son of Jean Antoine Rémond Jourdan and of Marie Anne Amellier.[2]

André Jordan (b. 24 Nov 1731) and Marie Anne Babeu (b. 4 Jul 1742) are the parents of this generation. André was a native of France; being born in Cazouls-les-Beziers (St-Saturnin), Agde in the Languedoc region. Marie Anne was a native of La Prairie. On 8 May 1754, André enrolled in the régiment de Royal Roussillon as a soldier in Compagnie de Poulharies. Two years later, he reenlisted for six years in Compagnie de Servies. The former unit was composed of grenadiers; the latter, of fusiliers. André sailed from Brest on 6 Apr 1756 aboard Le Léopard and arrived at Québec on 30 May 1756. The crossing was particularly difficult, as an epidemic broke out onboard during transit, and the ship was quarantined upon arrival. Compagnie de Servies was especially hard hit, as 10 of its 40 man-roster were stricken and five died. The ship’s commander, Sieur de Gomain (d. 19 Jun 1756), was court-martialed for neglecting hygiene, but died of disease before a verdict could be rendered. The Léopard was condemned as unseaworthy and was burned later that spring at Beauport.

André’s company took part in the successful French siege of Fort William Henry (10 Aug 1757) and in the Battle of Carillon (Fort Ticonderoga) on 8 Jul 1758. In 1759, Compagnie de Servies comprised the heart of the 486-man garrison at Niagara, which was overwhelmed by a British siege in late-July, where his company lost eight men. At the conclusion of the Seven Years’ War on 16 Sep 1760, the number of soldiers in the régiment de Royal Roussillon had dropped from its original 525 in Mar 1756 to 270.

André and Marie Anne were married on 10 Nov 1760 at St-Jean-François-Régis church in St-Philippe. The couple had nine children. Some were baptized in St-Philippe, some in La Prairie: Jacques André (b. 21 Mar 1761), Marie Angelique (b. 20 May 1762/d. 7 Aug 1762), François (b. 12 Jul 1763), Marie Ursule (b. 31 Jan 1766), Joseph Amable (b. 17 Mar 1768), Marie Marguerite (b. 14 Aug 1770/d. 25 Sep 1770), Pierre (b. 2 Aug 1771/d. 17 Nov 1771), Marie Anne (b. 13 Feb 1773/d. 15 Jul 1777) and Felix Marie (b. 22 Nov 1774/d. 28 Feb 1775).

Marie Anne (d. 7 Mar 1775) died in St-Philippe, probably from the same malady that had stricken her infant son, Felix Marie. She was buried the following day in Montréal. André remarried on 21 Jul 1777 to Ludivine Richard (b. 30 Apr 1753, Port-Royal, Acadie) in St-Philippe de La Prairie. They are known to have had six children: Marguerite Genevieve (b. 13 May 1778/d. 25 Feb 1779), Amable (b. 22 Mar 1780), Marie Ludivine (b. 22 Jun 1782), Marie Marguerite (b. 6 Feb 1785), Marie Felicite (b. 2 Mar 1787, L’Acadie) and Elisabeth (b. 19 Jun 1790/d. 19 May 1791). Andre’s signature appears on Marie Felicite’s baptismal record.

Ludivine died and was buried 29 Sep 1794 in L’Acadie, (St-Jean). André died (d. 11 Dec 1807) and was buried in St-Philippe de La Prairie. André was a maître d'école (a school teacher).
