Biography

John Jordan II[1] was born 1675 in Isle of Wight, Virginia Colony, to John Jordan I and Jane Brown. He married Jean Evans in Virginia Colony.[2]

His father, John Jordan (Richard, Thomas, Samuel) was born Abt. 1650 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, and died Oct 1687 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. [3]

Children of John (II) Jordan and Jean Evans are:

  1. Joseph
  2. Charles
  3. William
  4. Jane/Jean Jordan. (In 1717, John Jordan mentions his “son” John Evans and daughter Jean in regard to land at Ducking Stool Branch, Chowan County, NC.)[4]
  5. Probably John Jordan, Jr. (In 1721 & 1723 – Both John Jordan, Sr and John Jordan, Jr are listed in Chowan Co. tax list.) [5]

He is apparently the John Jordan who appears on the 1704 quit rent roll with 100 acres in Isle of Wight County, evidently his inherited land. On 9 November 1704, John Jordan and his wife Jean sold the 100 acres given to his father by Richard Jordan Sr., describing it as having descended to him as the heir of his father John Jordan.[6]

He does not seem to appear later in Isle of Wight or Surry records. By his generation, there was another contemporary John Jordan, and the subsequent records are difficult to differentiate.[7]

He may have moved to Chowan County, North Carolina, where a John Jordan and Jane Jordan witnessed a deed in 1716[8] and another deed in 1725.

Inscription about great grandson:

JOHN SMITH Son of JOSEPH SMITH Esq. Born 1712 Died 1780 and SARAH JORDAN Daughter of CHARLES JORDAN son of JOHN JORDAN Gent. and wife JEAN who came from Isle of Wight Co. Va. 1716

Burial of great grandson: Gatling-Smith Cemetery[9] Perquimans County North Carolina, USA[10]

“Thomas Speight's daughter Ruth (b. 1712) was eighteen at the time of the expedition. In the 1730s she married Joseph Jordan, brother to her sister Rachel's husband.”[11]

Notes

This probably refers to a different John Jordan:

April 1723 Henrico Co. VA (an abstract) "John Jordan Decd., Wm Goden (or Gordon or GODWIN) exhibits an account against the estate of John Jordan, decd. and makes oath that the balance there of being L1:12:6 & 100 lbs. tobac. is justly due him. MAJ. ISHAM RANDOLPH, Admr. of the estate appearing but making no objection. There to, it is ordered that he do pay unto sd. Gordon out of said DESCENDANTS estate in his hand the said sum, with costs also exo. ."[12]

Jordan-16252 and Jordan-7174 appear to represent the same person because: Both are the father of Joseph Jordan of Bertie Co. (The Josephs need to merged, as well.)
