Biography

According to "Notes on the Josselyn Family, of Massachusetts," published in 2014, Thomas "was probably the son of Abraham and Beatrice Josselyn."[1] An article published earlier reports that "Thomas, blacksmith,...was a juror at Plymouth, July 1680...living in Little Compton 1686."

The 1694 quitclaim Thomas jointly filed with Abraham and Beatrice's sons, his brothers Henry and Joseph, confirms the familial relationships.[2]

Thomas Joslin was born Abt. January 1657/58 in Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine,[citation needed] and died 1722 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. He married MARY VAUGHN December 21, 1681 in Kent County, Rhode Island. She was born Abt. 1660 in Newport County, Rhode Island, and died 1701 in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. Mary Vaughn was the widow of David Vaughn

Children of THOMAS JOSLIN and MARY VAUGHN are:

  1. THOMAS2 JOSLIN, b. 1682.
  2. ISAAC JOSLIN, b. 1684.
  3. SAMUEL JOSLIN, b. 1686.
  4. HENRY VAUGHN JOSLIN, b. 1696.
  5. KEZIAH JOSLIN, b. 1698.
  6. ABRAHAM JOSLIN, b. February 06, 1699/00.
  7. WILLIAM (COLONEL JOSSELYN) JOSLIN, b. 1701, Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island; d. Abt. August 22, 1771, Deerfield Tws, Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island.

Research Notes

  • Miss French's article suggests Thomas was born at Scarborough, but the Josselyns located there at the time were sons of Sir Thomas Josselyn, Deputy Governor.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

this bio says "She was born Abt. 1660 in Newport County, Rhode Island, and died 1701 in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. " His wife's record says "Died about 24 Aug 1720 at about age 70 in Rhode Islandmap [uncertain]" One or the other needs to be updated.

Also, if she was born in 1660 she would have been too young to be the wife of David Vaughan and mother of his son, John who is estimated to have been born in 1671. She would have only been 11 at the time of John's birth and 10 when she married David.

There are two profiles for the same Thomas Joslin who married widow Mary Vaughan; after extensive research I believe that his parents are Abraham and Beatrice; he was married to Mary UNKNOWN Vaughan and if merged, the two sets of children belong together.

I don't believe these are the correct parents for this Thomas Joslin because these parents have another child, Nathaniel, born the same year in Lancanster, MA. This information came from History of the Town of Waitsfield, Vermont, 1782-1908 with Family Genealogies by Matt Bushnell Jones, published by George E. Littlefield, Boston, MA, 1909. Joslin-287 and Josselyn-70 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, birth date, siblings. Disputed birth locations can be noted as a comment in the biography, or a definitive source given there (if existent) to resolve it.
